Our Review.

Retro looking and very minimalist of a sofa from IKEA introduced in 2008 to replace the Karlanda range – the Karlstad can be made even more Scandinavian with custom vintage legs, tufted cushions, or by giving it a long skirt. It truly is the ideal sofa for DIY hacking.

  1. Hello!

I’m looking for a chaise lounge with only a single arm (to sit next to an existing non-Ikea couch). I came across a second hand Karlstad chaise with 2 arms and I’m wondering if I take one arm off if there will be visible attachment points.

I had a look on Google and the Ikea website (at some of the current modular chaises) but I got no answers. Then I stumbled across this post and you look like you’re still giving advice even on the discontinued models! :)

    1. Hey Katherine, thanks for dropping by! You’re in the right place :)

Yes, that’s right – the attachment points will indeed be visible.

If you’re looking to cover this up, one easy way would be to get slipcovers for the chaise and leave both sides without arms.

If you want to keep the arms, the best thing to do (if you’re concerned about the exposed attachment points) would be to push it really close to your other couch so that the attachment point is not as visible.

      Hope this helps, good luck!

  2. Hello!
Do you know what size Allen wrench is used to remove the legs on this couch?
I just got given one but I don’t have the tools. Looking online is not helping me at all… And I’ve looked on the ikea website and can’t seem to be able to buy their toolkits for assembling furniture.
    Thanks so much!

    1. Hey Jenny,

Thanks for asking! According to the IKEA Karlstad assembly manual (in the article), the Allen wrench used is the 104601 wrench, which you may get second-hand on ebay. Simply search for “IKEA wrench 104601” and you’ll find a few options.

      Hope this helps :)

  3. Hi, if I convert my Karlstad corner sofa to a 3 seater and a 2 seater will individual covers fit? I have 2 spare arm rests I can use.

    1. Hi Carin, thanks for your question!

Yes, the individual covers will fit.

This is due to the Karlstad’s modular design – meaning that each component is affixed individually. You may disassemble and reassemble each part (ie. 2-seater section, corner section, 3-seater section, and each armrest), and the covers all go over each component individually.

You may also refer to page 11 of the Karlstad 2+3 corner sofa assembly manual for further guidance on how this is done. :)

      Hope this helps!

  4. Hi, do you know if the Karlstad 3 seater in white is made of cotton? It doesn’t feel like polyester, but I can’t find any information except about a grey polyester cover. Any info you have would be great.
