Our Review

The IKEA Soderhamn is a unique yet stylish sofa design. Its thin armrests give it an extra modern and contemporary feel, however the armrest isn’t something you’d want to put your hand or head on. If you want something a little more softer, adding a few extra pillows around the arms would be a great suggestion.

Still, it’s a yes from us! One of the many plus points is that you can always build your own custom sofa set with the modular Soderhamn. Whether to fit in the corner of your living room or as a grand sectional couch sitting in the center, just purchase a few sectional components and it’ll look great.

  1. Hi there! I have a right facing modular sofa with chaise. Is it possible to remove the arm rests and flip it to the other side? I am interested in buying one of your covers to upgrade the look.

    1. Hey Hannah,

You can definitely do this since the Soderhamn is a modular series! However; with that being said, you technically would not have to flip the armrests in order to use our slipcovers as our slipcovers come in pieces – each piece fits each part of your sofa accordingly. All you’ll really have to do is follow the IKEA Soderhamn assembly manual in reverse to disassemble your sofa, remove its old covers (if any), put our covers on and then re-assemble your sofa.

Here are a few Soderhamn assembly manuals you may refer to:

If you wish, you could call up IKEA or even drop us an email at info@comfortworks.com.au and one of our friendly agents will be happy to assist you :)

  2. Hi! Do the pieces have connector points or do they just kind of butt up next to each other? I worry about the sections separating when laying down etc.

  3. Hi! I feel like the seat cushions are soo thin. Do you know if I can add foam inserts and which is the best for the Soderhamn sofa? Thanks!

    1. Hey Tizeta,

If you’re in the States and would like to get some foam inserts custom made for your sofa, we have some friends over there who may ve able to help you! Check their website out here: https://ucprivatecourses.com/ref/comfortworks/

They essentially create custom foam inserts that you can order online through the comfort of your own home. Please be sure to measure your Soderhamn sofa and its cushions (if applicable) very closely first.

      Good luck! :)

  4. Hi there,
Can the chaise have the back panel removed and butt up next to the corner seat (so the back (head part)of the chaise would be next to the corner, and the chaise bit would be along the wall to give a sofa which is 2.5 seats long? Thanks Sarah

    1. Hey Sarah,

Yup, pretty sure you can do that since the Soderhamn is a modular series and each component can be removed as and when you please. You’ll just have to follow the original IKEA Soderhamn chaise assembly manual (in reverse) and get a buddy/family member to help you disassemble it.

      Here you go: https://blog.comfort-works.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/Soderhamn-Chaise-longue.pdf

I’m picturing your chaise acting as an extension to the corner-section and turning into a 3-seater. Is this the idea? If it is, it sure sounds like fun :)

  5. Hi there,
Just wondering about using two Soderhamn corner pieces to create a 3 seater with extra back pillows that you mentioned in your ‘super flexible’ article. It says to ‘clamp in the centre’ and I’d like to know if this is possible just using the existing connections, or whether you had to add something to clamp them, and if so what exactly? Thank you!

    1. Hey Monique!

It looks like the Soderhamn corner-section components each come with one large clamp and four other little ones – this can be checked via the Soderhamn corner-section assembly manual here: https://blog.comfort-works.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/Soderhamn-Corner-Section.pdf

You won’t need anything other than the clamps and of course a screw-driver to fix it in. Follow steps 3 & 4 on the manual! It should be more than enough if you’re using the 2 small clamps and then add on the 2 larger clamps (if possible).

We truly love playing around with modular components (such as the Soderhamn) as the possibilities are just about endless :)
