IKEA Finnala sofa review – Vimle’s successor

Four years ago, IKEA launched what was probably one of their best-designed sofas ever: the Vimle. And now they’ve done it again, this time with a few improvements and a whole new name. Lo and behold, the Finnala!

But wait – does this mean that the Vimle has been discontinued?

Well, yes and no. It appears that the Vimle has been phased out from most parts of the US, Canada, and Europe mid-2020, but is still available in the UK and in the Netherlands. Meanwhile, the Finnala has been introduced in the USA and in Canada, but is not yet available in Australia/Spain/UK/France.

So what gives? We think that IKEA may be planning to discontinue the Vimle soon enough, now that its predecessor has arrived. We do think that IKEA may just be catering to their American and, perhaps in time, European markets, hence replacing the Vimle with the Finnala in these regions (sorta) while maintaining the Vimle in the Asian regions.

Considering the fact that the Vimle has been one of IKEA’s best models, the Finnala does indeed have some pretty big shoes to fill… which is exactly what we will be looking into here.

Overview

It comes as no surprise at all that the Finnala looks just like the Vimle. It’s got the same square arms, the same square seat and back cushions. It’s also available in the same exact configurations as the Vimle was; which was literally any way you’d want your sofa to be.

The main difference between the two models lies in their size and inner build.

We expected at least a slight difference in the sofa’s depth, but what’s really interesting is that only the backrest and the arm height have been increased by 3cm. Everything else is exactly the same as the Vimle’s.

This means that the sofa emerges as just a taller version of its predecessor. Perhaps it makes springing off the couch easier? Well if that’s the case, there is more than just added height at play here.

Comfort

Remember the shocking addition of springs into the Uppland seat cushions? It seems that this little upgrade is here to stay; the Finnala seat cushions now also come with springs inside, which is a serious upgrade from the Vimle. This way, the seat cushions may be a little firmer than the Vimle’s, but they have more resilient support inside and certainly won’t lose their shape too easily.

The modular quality of this sofa is still and always will be one of our favourite things about this series. The fact that you could have this sofa in virtually any configuration is already a major win in the comfort department. As far as comfort goes, it works.

Comfort score: 8/10

Aesthetics

Okay.

After making all the right tweaks in just the right areas, IKEA decided to slash the Vimle’s previous nine (and, in our opinion, already limited) colour options down to six even-safer colours! Bye-bye edgy dark green and RIP fun yellow!

We now have between Cream, Slightly Darker Cream, Grey, Slightly Darker Grey, Dark Blue and Strange Red-White to choose from.

Not sure how I feel about the red and white, but I do wish black were still an option. It does definitely look like IKEA is taking a chance here with Dalstorp Multicolor being their one edgy fabric option.

Aesthetics score: 7.5/10

Price

From what we can see so far, the price points of the Finnala series seem pretty normal for IKEA’s standards. There doesn’t even seem to be much of a difference from the Vimle’s prices.

Vimle prices

Other than a US$30 increase in the 2-seater sofa and a US$50 increase in the 3-seater sofa, everything else seems pretty much the same. Considering the fact that the Finnala is slightly larger and has some improvements under its belt (or rather; in its cushions), we’d have to say that US$30 –US$50 is a small price to pay for the added comfort and use you’ll get in the long run.

Pretty affordable, no? We think so, especially since it is part of a modular series which would make it “growable”. Thinking of expanding your sofa? The Finnala is definitely perfect for this.

Price score: 7.50/10

Practicality

Just like the Vimle (and every other IKEA sofa), the Finnala has the same wonderful 10-year warranty and all of its usual benefits.

As far as the function is concerned, it’s got all of the same opening/closing mechanisms on the chaise, the same pull-out bed mechanism, and the same easy take-off and put-back-on function on the storage footstool’s top. The one difference now is the added springs into the seat cushions, which would undoubtedly keep the cushions in shape for much longer than the Vimle.

What’s not to love here? An added reinforcement to an already-solid structure is always welcome. If anything, we think it solidifies the trustworthiness of the Finnala’s quality, taking over from the Vimle’s, of course. But… is it slipcover-able? Yes, and no. Since it is the same exact shape as the Vimle, the series can definitely be slipcovered in the same way.

However; the added depth and height means that the Vimle slipcovers will not be interchangeable with the Finnala series. The good news is that we’re already working on templates for this model, so it won’t be long until this is available on our website.

Practicality score: 8/10

Final verdict

Here is the overall score of the IKEA Finnala sofa series:

Comfort: 8/10
Aesthetics: 7.5/10
Price: 7.5/10
Practicality: 8/10
Final verdict: 8/10

The Finnala scores an impressive 8/10 overall! It is well-deserved for a sofa that has maintained its all-roundedness while still continuing to improve its structure and form.

Sure, the colours are rather limited, but hey, the added springs inside its seat cushions are going to make up for that 10 years down the line.

Imagine sitting on your Finnala 2-seater with chaise thinking “wow, I’m finally ready to extend this into a 5-seater and it still feels brand new!”

IKEA Morabo sofa review

It seems like only yesterday we were crying over the Karlstad being discontinued and replaced with the Landskrona. And just as we’ve just gotten used to it, here we are six years later saying hello to the Morabo!

Does this mean that the Landskrona is being replaced completely by the Morabo?

Well, let’s see. IKEA has discontinued the Landskrona in the US and Canada, but not in Spain, France, the UK or the Netherlands.

Overview

It seems the Morabo has pulled a Finnala on us! The only difference between the Morabo and its predecessor, the Landskrona, is that it is about 3 cm wider, deeper and taller.

Yep, that’s about it folks!

Here is a measurement comparison:

We think the motivation behind the Morabo was to create a version of the Landskrona that is better catered to the American market. From the measurements, it looks like the Morabo was meant to be a taller sofa (for taller people), and with added width and depth. Does 3cm (a little more than an inch) make such a difference though?

Aesthetics

It isn’t difficult to recognise a timeless classic when you see one. This design is an oldie and a goodie, so there’s no doubt why IKEA decided to keep this similar design throughout the Karlstad, Landskrona – and now finally the Morabo.

If you were thinking of getting a Morabo, your options would be between five leather colours and two fabric colours.

We think that the Morabo was designed for a certain look in the living room; it seems to be leather-centric as most of its neutral colours only come in leather options.

Perhaps the Morabo was designed to be a more affordable and practical alternative to the classic leather tufted sofa? Think CB2’s Savile leather tufted sofa, or Crate and Barrel’s Rollins leather button tufted sofa – but with removable back and seat cushions.

While the leather-tufted look is a classic and can work in many living rooms, we do think that the colour and material combinations could be more balanced.

Comfort

Just like the Landskrona, the Morabo isn’t that comfortable – but it isn’t exactly uncomfortable, either. In fact, there are only two notable differences between the Landskrona and the Morabo.

Firstly, the Morabo is slightly taller: 3cm taller to be exact. Secondly, the back cushions are considerably thicker as they are apparently filled with a high-resilience foam and polyester wadding for added comfort.

Morabo cross-section

In any case, the cushions on the Morabo have maintained their firmness which is always great for back support.

Two things that stayed the same; the arms and the tufting. The arms still remain way too high to nap against! The tufting also looks like it’s here to stay. We feel like it is pretty much the same sofa but slightly bigger and thicker.

Comfort score: 6/10

Practicality

It’s got exactly the same structure and leg placements (which we think is the best upgrade since the Karlstad). It’s even got the same velcro attached behind the back cushions keeping them propped up against the backrest.

We were even pleased to know that a portion of the leather surface is made from actual leather – which shouldn’t be a surprise since the Landskrona leather options were the same. This definitely prolongs the life of the couch as top-grain leather is far less prone to tearing and cracking compared to PU.

It’s also very easy to clean; a simple wipe with a damp cloth or even spot-cleaning with some dilute soap water should do the trick.

If we had one qualm here, it would be that the Morabo isn’t exactly made to be slipcovered (what with the tufting and all!). If it were slipcoverable, it would still have to be disassembled first in order to get each slipcover component installed. We do believe there is a way to work around this with custom slipcovers, so all is not lost.

The Morabo seems to have inherited its predecessor’s trusty practicality and quality. It seems almost like a rigid sofa – but then again, that’s exactly where this legacy (Karlanda-Karlstad-Landskrona-Morabo) gets its respect from.

Practicality score: 7/10

Price

The Morabo seems to be a tad pricier than the Landskrona was. Going at US$849 for the leather options, the Morabo is around US$70 more than the Landskrona was. The non-leather options are available for much less: US$649

Is it worth the extra few bucks?

Pros: Thicker back cushions, taller seats and overall height (cushions may take longer to compress)

Cons: Colour/material options are rather limited to mostly leather.

I guess it all boils down to whether you’re looking for a leather couch. If so, then paying a little more for these long-term upgrades may very well be worth it.

Price score: 6/10

Final verdict

Overall, we give the Morabo a 6.5/10. Still a pretty alright sofa, with the same great sturdiness and support. We do wish that the colour and material options were better balanced.

The ultimate guide to modern boho decor

What is modern boho style?

Modern boho interiors take the best of the colourful, characterful bohemian style, and marry it with a more pared back, neutral look. The trend is all about personality and texture, but without going into maximalist territory.

How to get the modern boho look

Start with the boho part. Boho or bohemian style is all about expressing the different facets of your personality, and combining them to create a look that is truly unique. Bold colours, unusual textures, eclectic artwork, mismatched prints, motifs and patterns are all a key part of the look.

Then it’s time to make it modern. The beauty of modern boho decorating is that, far from diluting the bohemian aspect, the modern elements make them sing. A neutral-coloured wall makes vibrant furnishings pop; sleek metal hardware adds a welcome contrast to softer textures. Open spaces make the most of elaborate furniture and beautiful details, rather than crowding them on top of each other.

The elements of bohemian style

What’s great about bohemian style is that there are very few rules. It’s all about mixing and matching the things that you love, whether or not they conform to conventional design rules. It’s also a very easy look to achieve with accessories and soft furnishings, without having to change up any larger pieces of furniture. (If you are planning to get new pieces, vintage is definitely the way to go.)

Modern boho style is great for people who love playing with colour and materials. Bold jewel tones like deep greens, pinks, oranges and purples are bohemian staples – make them contemporary with warm neutrals and natural materials like rattan, sisal and jute. Add dramatic flair with wallpaper, statement curtains or lighting.

It’s all about comfort (and textiles)

No harsh lines. No purely decorative chairs. Everything in a modern boho home should be cosy and slightly lived-in. Classic bohemian elements are vintage rugs, huge tapestry floor cushions and fringey curtains – take what appeals to you and works for your home, and leave what you don’t like. Fabrics should be soft, inviting and not at all precious – we love a brushed cotton for this look, or a washable velvet for extra sheen.

Soft furnishings like cushions, throws, table cloths and runners are perfect for achieving the look. Go for a mix of motifs, prints and textile textures, mixing in handmade elements like knit, crochet, tapestry, embroidery and tassels for extra sensory details.

An easy way to update existing furniture to tie in with a boho design scheme is through the judicious use of textiles. Add cushions to soften the look of dining chairs; try table runners or tablecloths to update tables and surfaces. You can give a sofa an instant new look with a slipcover in a complementary new shade. You’d be surprised how much a pink sofa lifts the room!

Keep it balanced with neutrals

Balance is key here, to avoid sensory overwhelm – you want your favourite pieces to sing, not drown each other out. If you’re worried that a white wall is too harsh, look to earthy tones, browny-pinks or even warm greys to give the eye somewhere to rest.

Use a mix of colourful items and neutrals to zone your living room, so that different areas are distinct. Rugs are a great way of visually separating your lounging area from your dining area, for instance, even if you still want to maintain an open-plan space.

Lighting is key

Keep lighting soft and warm. (Something I often think about: Troye Sivan’s ‘warm soup of light’ in his Architectural Digest home tour.) (Now there’s a modern boho house.)

Add lamps, lanterns and candles to your lighting set-up. These fulfil a dual function – not only do they soften harsh overhead light, they also act as decorative objects. Elaborate lamp shades also work well to soften overhead light, as do chandeliers. Yes, you can have a chandelier if you want one.

If you’re worried about the safety or environmental impact of candles, imitation candles create the same flickering effect and last much longer.

You can never have too many plants

Plants are an essential part of any bohemian home, modern or not. Greenery adds brightness and life to a home, can soften dingy corners and tie together disparate looks. If you’re not confident you can keep plants alive, try these low-maintenance varieties. Or feel free to go faux – Hilton Carter’s collection for Target has some of the chicest faux plants we’ve ever seen.

Transition your entire house from Summer to Fall

Fall is around the corner, and you may find your home decor at odds with lingering summer vibes.

As the cooler weather rolls in, it is time to swap out sunny colours and warm vibes for the cosy ambience of fall. This doesn’t mean that every part of your living room needs to be changed, though. You’d be surprised at how much of your decor may be reused.

The secret to this transformation is to make subtle changes that incorporate key seasonal accents into your living space.

Keep the soft whites, beige tones, and natural textures

White Soft Indoor Furnishing

One of the main benefits of a neutral colour palette is how seamlessly it can transition from one season to another. Neutral palettes are easy to pair with more vibrant Fall accents and decorations.

Breathable materials like cotton and linen are great at temperature-regulating during the hot seasons, but can also keep us warm and cosy during colder times. This makes them totally suitable across Summer to Fall!

Adding a little (pumpkin) spice to stir up Fall feels

Natural Fall decoration pumpkins corn husks dried leaves

Utilise the classic elements of Fall like fallen maple leaves, dried branches, DIY wreaths, white and orange pumpkins, pine cones, acorns, corn husks (and more). Natural materials like these add a warm, rustic vibe to your home, and are a more authentic and eco-friendly way of keeping to the theme.

Pair these elements together as decoration with your basic neutral tones and textures to create the ultimate Fall environment in your home.

The living room

Soft furnishings

Keep the white linen (or cotton) couch covers for that farmhouse look, and throw a tartan blanket over the couch with a couple of extra scatter pillows to keep warm.

If you’re looking for a quick transformation, our sofa covers come in several natural fabrics which are perfect for Fall! Custom make your own sofa cover in linen or cotton, or try velvets and leathers for a bolder look.

Decorations

Add gourds and dark coloured candles on the coffee table, along with pine cones and acorns. Liven up the fireplace mantle with a DIY grapevine wreath, orange and white pumpkins, acorns, dried branches from outside or dried maple leaves.

The bedroom

Fall theme bedroom decor

Soft furnishings

Keep the white sheets and curtains, and throw some extra rugs around the bedroom floor for warm, cozy feelings.

Decoration

Add an extra checkered blanket over the bed, perhaps even another pillow here and there in a darker coloured fabric (such as burnt orange or rusty red).

Throw a table runner or a checkered blanket over your dressing table. Include fall-themed decorations such as small gourds, pumpkins, dried flowers and branches and more.

The dining room/kitchen

Fall dining table setup

Soft furnishings

Lay a table runner across the table. This could be tartan, checkered, or plain, as long as it stands out from whatever colour your table may be. If your dining chairs are roomy enough, you could even add some seat cushions for extra cozy vibes.

Decorations

Next, make a table centerpiece with long dried branches. You could add anything to it: dried maple leaves, acorns, pine cones, corn husks or more twigs, even.

Add some tall dark candles to the middle of the table if possible. This is an elegant yet simple setup which should set the mood for Fall season meals with family and friends.

Put gourds and small white pumpkins on the kitchen counters and shelves (these are easy to slip in anywhere and instantly change the look of a space!)

The bathroom

Soft furnishings

Swap out your floor mats for extra thick rugs. Thick rugs don’t just look cosy, but they also allow anyone using the bathroom to keep their feet warm.

Add extra hand towels for guests, mixing in warm fall colours with your usual colour palette.

Decorations

Brighten up the atmosphere with fresh fall flowers (such as marigolds or chrysanthemums).

Hang up a dried wreath by the window, if there is one! Otherwise, you could do with a candle by the sink where the flowers are.

Woman decorating her home with fall candles and decoration

At the end of the day, your choice of decor is completely up to you. Some may go all out and buy a whole house’s worth of new decorations and even furniture – but it doesn’t always have to be expensive or extreme.

Most of the things in your home can be swapped around, mixed, and matched to create the perfect atmosphere for Fall. A good cheat is to get slipcovers for your sofa, which you may easily remove and switch up as the seasons change.
