10 ways to make living in an apartment with your dog easier

Dogs are beautiful creatures that make great pets.

They are excellent companions that bring happiness and joy to our lives. However, living with any dog in an apartment can be tricky not just due to the fact these tend to be smaller spaces, but also because most apartment buildings have rules against living with dogs.

Nevertheless, you need to know that not all dog breeds can survive in an apartment, so it’s best to be sure that your dog’s temperament will suit apartment living and if it is, be ready to commit to making it work.

Some great example of apartment-friendly breeds are Yorkies, French bulldogs and pugs, but once you’ve committed to moving with your dog, you’ll need strategies to help make living in an apartment with your dog as comfortable for both of you as possible.

Here are our top tips:

1. Set up an exercise pen.

Consider building a simple exercise pen using some simple power tools and customizing it to your home’s layout and decor.

This will help you confine your dog and his bed to a part of the apartment where he’s safe, secure and supervised as well as keep him away from the front door.

This way, you’ll give him a dedicated space where he’ll have the opportunity to acclimatize to his new surroundings and you’ll have the chance to move everything in with peace of mind.

2. Feed your dog a balanced diet.

A highly nutritious meal can help keep your pup healthy, happy and alleviate numerous common illnesses among other dogs.

Small, energetic dogs in particular need a nutritionally-balanced meal that’s rich in protein in small portions.

3. Exercise your dog daily.

Dogs can get their exercise by running or playing fetch, even in small apartments.

However, be sure to make time for your dog by taking him for walks in the evenings, which make for an excellent way for you two to bond and for him to get some fresh air after being in the apartment all day.

4. Store your dog’s essentials in a dedicated corner.

If you want to share your small apartment with a dog, having a dedicated space for his toys, equipment, food and snacks is essential.

Instead of having them all over the house, you can allocate a small part of it for this to keep your space neat and clutter-free.

This will make it easier for you to grab whatever you need and go whenever you want to take him out.

5. Keep him busy with puzzle toys.

Puzzle toys that keep your dog mentally challenged for hours can be helpful when you live in an apartment that doesn’t have access to a spacious balcony or backyard.

These treat-containing toys — like the ZippyPaws Woodland Friends Burrow, Interactive Squeaky Hide and Seek Plush Dog Toy — will not only keep your best bud entertained for hours, it’ll tire him out and keep him out of mischief when evening rolls around.

6. Have him trained.

The right training can help you live peacefully with your dog in a small apartment.

Living in an apartment means sharing walls with your neighbors, so it’s essential that your dog knows what’s acceptable and what’s not when he’s at home.

Proper training can also help you maintain a dog-free space in certain parts of your home, which is ideal if you live with people who have allergies.

7. Be mindful of your neighbours.

Living in a shared space means having to be especially mindful of your dog’s behaviour and messes, especially when he’s out in the building’s common areas.

Having a dog that’s well-behaved and being quick about cleaning up his poop is also important when you live in an apartment since not everyone in the building will love dogs.

8. Consider doggy daycare.

If your dog tends to be anxious and bark while you’re out, it may be best to consider taking him to a doggy daycare while you look for help to heal his anxiety.

This way, instead of being left alone at home and aggravating your neighbours, he’ll have the opportunity to socialise with other people and play with other dogs while being looked after when you’re out.

9. Keep your pooch soothed.

If your dog’s easily spooked by unfamiliar sights and noises, try adding blinds to your windows or even leaving the TV on if it’s soothing for him.

Another way to keep him calm and feeling secure is to leave a white noise machine on to mask the noises coming from outside.

An even better way to keep your pooch anxiety free? Expose him to different types of noises and people as soon as you adopt him so he gets accustomed to, and not terrified of them.

10. Design a low-maintenance apartment.

One of the easiest ways to make your apartment a joy to live in for both you and your dog is to design a space that’s as low-maintenance as possible.

This means minimal clutter, thoughtfully arranged furniture as well as easy-to-clean materials.

Think: Light, airy rugs; removable, machine-washable and claw-resistant sofa and dining chair slipcovers; colours that match your pet’s fur and spill-resistant fabrics.

Not only will small but functional touches like these make your home pet-friendly, they’ll also save you plenty of time cleaning.

Your sofa is an investment piece – here’s how to make it last

The excitement of stepping foot into your home for the first time is a memorable one.

As you mentally put together a list of to-dos and decorating plans, there’s no doubt that furniture choices are also at the forefront of your mind.

A recent survey has shown that a quarter of us make a decision as to whether to put an offer in on a house in just 10 minutes of the viewing, but how about once you’ve got the keys?

Surprisingly, the interior design decisions, such as colour choices and which sofa to buy take almost three times as long.

When it comes to your living room, you want it to be a warm and welcoming space in your home, where you can both relax and welcome guests, and  comfy sofa where you can lounge or sit and chat is likely to be the centre point of the room, so you want to get it right.

Before browsing for your dream sofa, it’s vital that you have the right information in order to make the choices which will be right for you. Your sofa is an investment piece, and on average, it should last anything between 7 and 15 years, so you’ll want it to look good for that period of time.

With that in mind, here’s why your sofa is an investment piece and how you can make it last for all those years ahead.

Why you should invest in a high-quality sofa

The most important pieces of furniture in your home are the ones that you use the most and on a daily basis.

Living room furniture, and your sofa especially, are worth investing in as they will likely receive a lot of wear and tear.

Your sofa should, ideally, be the first piece of furniture that you buy as it will have the biggest impact on the rest of the space in your living room.

Its shape, design and colour will go on to influence the rest of your living room furniture and style choices, so you want to make sure that it’s a perfect fit.

This means picking a sofa that’s strong and durable both in build and fabric choice to ensure you get the maximum use out of your sofa for many years to come.

Consider your sofa’s uses

Before you purchase your sofa, take some time to consider how you plan to use it.

For many homeowners, the sofa is likely to be a huge investment piece, so you need to think about what you want from it, from both an aesthetic and functional point of view.

Choosing a sofa is about style and substance, so you want to ask yourself what, who, when and where: What will your sofa be used for (watching TV, formal use or lounging)? Who’ll use your sofa? When will you most likely be using it? And where do you think it’ll work best in your living room?

Choose a fabric for longevity

The fabric you choose for your sofa is vital when it comes to just how long it will last.

It’ll require regular maintenance and cleaning, and you may even need to get it professionally cleaned every now and then, but for the everyday spills and bumps, your fabric choice will play a huge role in just how long your sofa will last.

If you have pets or children, then it might be best to choose a long-wearing fabric, such as leather or cotton, in darker colours so that stains are less likely to show up. If you are using your sofa in a more formal setting, then luxury fabrics, lighter colours or even a designer sofa might be better for you.

Make your sofa last longer

Knowing the ins and outs of caring for and keeping your new sofa clean on a daily, weekly and yearly basis will naturally help to extend its life.

Here’s how:

Daily: Your sofa works hard to keep you feeling comfortable, so after some time, they can start to look a little ‘tired’. If you have fibre-filled cushions, be sure to plump them up every day to help them keep their original shape and form as well as swap them around so that one cushion doesn’t get used more than the others. If you drop or spill something on your sofa, it’s best to clean up the mess straight away with a clean, dry cloth then dabbing to spot clean the affected area.

Weekly: Wipe down your sofa once every week with a clean cloth (depending on the fabric of your sofa, this can either be a damp or dry cloth) to remove dust and dirt that’s built up. If you can, remove the cushions and hoover underneath using a low setting and soft brush attachment and do the same for your sofa cushions. Avoid using fabric sprays if you haven’t tested in an inconspicuous area first, as some chemicals can stain.

Monthly: If your sofa sits in direct sunlight, then it is best to check very month or so that there is no discolouration on its fabric. If you want to protect the fabric of your sofa, the easiest way to do this is to give it a removable, machine-washable slipcover that also lets you have fun with different fabric textures and colours.

8 productivity-boosting gift ideas for Christmas

Less than a year ago, work-from-home was just a vague, distant idea for most working folks.

In the blink on an eye, it’s become pretty much the norm for many, thanks to a virus-that-shall-not-be-named. So what’s a productivity-loving work-from-homer with an enduring get-shit-done spirit to do?

As far as we’re concerned, there’s only one answer to this question, and it’s to be over-prepared AF because hey, you never know when you’ll need to feed the kids, call the plumber, put out a project-management fire, clean up vomit the cat left on your brand-new carpet and show up for a Zoom call all at the same time, right?

So in honour of your favourite WFH-ers, we thought we’d come up with the best gifts that’ll help them make their at-home work-life juggling a whole lot easier while getting down to business.

You’re welcome and enjoy!

1. Very, very strong coffee.

First things first, waking up in the morning for work: Very important — so important that the stronger the coffee, the better. And no one makes ’em cuppa Joes more intense than Biohazard, which claims to make the world’s strongest coffee.

2. Oxygen-giving plants.

If you’re spending all day at home, you’ll want plenty of fresh air around, and by fresh air we mean a regular supply of oxygen. We may be over-estimating a tiny wee bit (OK, a lot), but a healthy number of potted plants might just help your giftee think more clearly. Perhaps a couple of pots of Snake Plant (Dracaena trifasciata) — which we hear also does a smashing job of clearing the air — might just do the trick. Bonus: The pretty green stuff’s known to help soothe stress and anxiety when the going gets tough.

3. A pro-level web camera.

Image: Logitech

Forget the crappy, grainy, built-in cameras that come with most computers. You want your bestie to look like a rock star at their next meeting and the Logitech C920S HD Pro Webcam with HD autofocus, light correction and custom camera settings can most definitely help them do that.

4. Coping strategies (and a couple of laughs).

Image: Firebox

Got a colleague who’s struggling with WFH life or just needs some humour in their daily work routine? Send a copy of Sarah Cooper’s 100 Tricks To Appear Smart In Meetings: How To Get By Without Even Trying their way and watch that frown turn upside down. Did we mention that humour relieves stress, which in turn, helps boost productivity? There you go. Mission accomplished.

5. A daily planner.

Image: Moleskin

Keep your bestie keeping up with their schedule and to-dos using a good old fashioned paper diary-slash-planner like Moleskin’s 12-Month Daily Planner. It’s great to go digital, but honestly, nothing beats being able to see your entire week written down on paper without having to go online. Bonus: No accidentally deleting important meetings!

6. A laptop riser.

Image: SAMDI

Bad posture can really do a number of your body, and when you’re staring at the computer that’s waaayyy below eye level for comfort nine hours or more a day, neck pain can quickly get in the way of your bestie’s comfort (and not to mention their physical and mental health). An easy fix: A laptop riser like the SAMDI Wooden Laptop Stand that gets both level for more comfort and even more work done.

7. White noise.

Know someone who’s easily distracted by passing traffic, their noisy neighbours or just about anything that moves? Make their day (and productivity) better with a white noise machine like Sound Of Sleep’s LectroFan Classic. As its name suggests, this soothing baby doubles as a mighty handy sleep inducer for night-time too.

8. Noise-cancelling headphones.

Image: Sony

If your giftee prefers to work without noise of any kind, you might want to get something that helps them invite more blissful silence into their work day, listen to their favourite beats and have call conversations with more ease and comfort. Our recommendation: The hands-free, adaptive, high-resolution audio Sony WH-1000XM4 Wireless Noise-Canceling Headphones.

Trouble brews when the two look-alikes end up crossing paths, triggering erm, complications that send both down unexpected trajectories.

8. Merry Happy Whatever

Image: Netflix

Family is the greatest gift of all…unless yours turns out to be a cult. In this Netflix original series, Emmy brings home new boyfriend Matt to meet her close-knit but eccentric family. Emmy and Matt’s relationship, along with everyone’s patience are put to the test as the family’s strong-willed patriarch, Don, does his level best to deal with the stress of the holidays and needs of his family in his own way. You can expect to laugh, cry and feel everything else in-between as you watch this one.

9. Klaus

Image: Netflix

Jesper is a struggling postal academy student who finds himself being stationed on a frozen island near the Arctic Circle, where he makes friends with Alva, a local teacher and Klaus, a reclusive carpenter who lives alone in a cabin filled with handmade toys. 10. Holidate
