Should you reupholster your Pottery Barn sofa?

Feeling overwhelmed and angsty trying to figure out what to do with that oft-used and well-loved Pottery Barn sofa of yours?

You’re not alone; this is a crossroads many furniture owners arrive at when they alas notice their comfortable couch is looking a bit too “comfortable.” Or, they’re a bit tired of looking at the same sofa for the last five years and are ready for something fresh and new.

The decision of whether to go all out with a new sofa purchase or hold out by reviving the one you have with new upholstery is not an easy one.

We hope to make your life (and this decision) a tad easier by posing things to consider when thinking of reupholstering your sofa, whether you have the PB Basic Sofa or another style.

Question #1: Do you like your sofa enough to keep it for years to come?

When you buy a new sofa, you instantly enter a long-term relationship that can often be financially difficult to leave.

With the typical mid-range sofa lasting 7-15 years and costing $1000-$2000, replacing the one you bought after only a few years can be challenging to justify. If the upholstery is worn and the sofa used daily by your active family or by oft-present guests, it would seem like a logical choice.

However, is the upholstery still good and you’ve simply grown tired of looking at your long-term companion and desire something new and different?

If the sofa serves you well in comfort and function, and you like the style enough, keeping it and replacing the upholstery would prove worthwhile and possibly cost-effective.

But, if you aren’t feeling your current sofa on any level, it’s time to float the idea of getting yourself a new one. A mere aesthetic revamp isn’t going to keep you interested in the long term. The issues you have with your sofa will come up once the magic of the makeover wears off.

Question #2: Does it have strong, sturdy bones?

If your sofa has a rickety frame, creaky springs and/or a sagging center, the answer to this question is no, and a new upholstery job can’t save it. In this situation, it is not advisable to invest in keeping it.

Your sofa may be in tip-top condition and is still firm, springy, without sag, and has 5-10 years of use left in it. If so, then it possesses a world of possibilities for rejuvenation through covering with new fabric or leather

7 Questions You Need To Ask Yourself If You’re Thinking Of Reupholstering Your Pottery Barn Sofa

Question #3: Is the sofa a good fit for your current space and the way you live?

Did you get your current sofa home and realize it didn’t suit your space in size or shape? Or, perhaps you chose a three-seater sofa when your big family would have benefited from a sectional?

If any of these areas is at issue for you, you will want to determine if re-upholstery is going to serve you as well as possibly buying a new sofa that fits your space and requirements ideally.

Question #4: Are you willing to splurge on reupholstery?

Depending upon the type of upholstery fabric, sofa details such as tufting or piping, and the expertise of the upholsterer you choose, re-upholstery can get expensive.

Other things that will add to the cost of the re-upholstery are replacement of cushion cores and fortifying the sofa back with padding or down.

Often, it can cost the same or more than the original sofa. You’ll certainly have to determine if you love your current sofa enough to invest in it for a longer-term.

Question #5: Are you willing to live without your sofa for a month or longer?

Many upholsterers will have you drop the sofa off and keep it for anywhere from several weeks to several months. We’ve even heard horror stories of customers waiting as long as a year to get their reupholstered sofas back.

For an active family or for those whose sofas are their go-to relaxation spot, being without their couch can disrupt daily life and cause stress and worry. Can you live without your sofa for a month or more?

Question #6: Have you found an upholstery fabric you can’t live without?

If you’ve been considering reupholstering your pottery barn sofa for a while, you may have already been on the hunt for the perfect upholstery. Maybe you found the perfect colour or pattern and are set on using it to make over your current sofa.

7 Questions You Need To Ask Yourself If You’re Thinking Of Reupholstering Your Pottery Barn Sofa

Did you answer “yes” to all the questions above?

If you answered “yes” to the questions above, then reupholstering your current sofa sounds like the only way to go. Or is it?

Question #7: Have you considered slipcovers as an alternative to reupholstery?

As an owner of a Pottery Barn sofa, you’ll be able to to find slipcovers specifically made for PB sofas that will save you a ton of money, time and worry in a number of ways:

  1. Slipcovers cost a fraction of re-upholstery or buying new.
  2. You can order a new set of slipcovers for a fresh look whenever you feel like it. You’re never stuck with one fabric the way you are with upholstery.
  3. You keep your sofa while waiting for delivery of your new slipcovers —you won’t have to pine away for your sofa that has been at the upholsterer for what seems like forever.
  4. You can try out a fabric before you buy — run it under water, smear it with ketchup, rub it on your cat (or dog), leave it under the sun for a couple of days — and then pick the fabric you love the most.

7 amazing IKEA hacks your cat will love

If your cat could talk, it would probably tell you to buy more IKEA furniture. Affordability is one reason, and the other would be all the IKEA hacks that you can do to make it more cat-friendly because they’re just so customisable!

After all, we only want the best for our feline kids, whether or not they’re being standoffish or super cuddly. Plus, some of these IKEA hacks look so good, you can’t even tell they’ve been designed with cats in mind.

Ready to make your house even more cat-friendly with these IKEA hacks? Read on.

1. Lack shelves or Mosslanda ledges as kitty walkways

https://www.instagram.com/p/BbsJvXnBYK7/

Not only are the IKEA Lack shelves an absolute IKEA must-have thanks to its minimal and floating look, but also because it is so customisable.

In fact, they’re so customisable that you can purchase several and create a makeshift cat ladder on your wall. Your cats will have endless fun at home climbing up and down the shelves made just for them.

This hack also works with the wider IKEA Mosslanda picture ledges!

However, it might be difficult to explain to guests why those shelves are empty…

2. Doll beds turned into kitty beds

7 Amazing IKEA Hacks That Your Cat Will Fall In Love With

When IKEA came out with its Duktig doll bed meant as children’s playthings, they probably never imagined that creative IKEA hackers out there would use those doll beds as—you guessed it—cat beds.

It makes perfect sense because these doll beds are the exact size for cats to sleep on. Just be sure to line it with some comfortable bedding for the ultimate catnap.

Have more than one cat at home? No problem.

Make like siblings in a room and create bunk beds by stacking two or more IKEA Duktig doll beds on top of each other. We won’t take responsibility, however, if they decide to all pile onto one bed.

3. A concealed litter area made with the IKEA Besta

7 Amazing IKEA Hacks That Your Cat Will Fall In Love With

For this hack, you’ll need an IKEA Besta side cabinet and a little bit of elbow grease. The two-door cabinet is perfect to hide your cat’s litter box in, as this hack proves.

All you need to do is saw out some doors for the cat to walk through, and you’ll have a delightful little private space for your cat to do its business in peace.

A plus point is that the concealed litter area doesn’t let unpleasant odours spread. As they say: out of sight, out of mind.

4. An IKEA Osted rug turned into a scratching and climbing wall

7 Amazing IKEA Hacks That Your Cat Will Fall In Love With

Does your cat enjoy sharpening its claws on everything you know and love, from your chairs to your favourite antique bedpost?

Stop that once and for all by creating a makeshift scratching wall for them.

Sure, scratching posts exists, but if you’re living in a tiny home with no extra real estate for a whole scratching post, this IKEA hack will work perfectly for you.

Simply hang the IKEA Osted on the wall. The natural fibre from the agave plant makes this rug extra durable, so it can handle many years of kitty manhandling.

5. Update your cat’s old scratching post with the IKEA Osted

7 Amazing IKEA Hacks That Your Cat Will Fall In Love With

Have an old cat scratching post that has seen better days? Good news—you don’t have to splurge on a new one, just update it with the IKEA Osted rug, an IKEA Nedda chair pad, and some elbow grease.

Based on this IKEA hack, you can wrap the Osted rug around your cat’s old scratching post, use the chair pad as the landing pad at the top of the post, and voila! A brand new plaything for your cat.

6. A climbing tower fashioned from the IKEA Billy bookcase

7 Amazing IKEA Hacks That Your Cat Will Fall In Love With

If you have an old IKEA Billy bookcase that you’re looking to replace, maybe repurpose it for your cats!

This hack will require a bit of effort, but your cats will love it. You’ll need to saw out some openings on the shelves for Kitty to climb through, as well as laying out some non-slip rugs.

Put a prize at the top of the bookshelf: a cosy little bed as a reward for all that climbing. It’s almost like your cat has its own penthouse!

7. A minimal and chic nap area with the IKEA Kallax

Want your cat items to match your home’s immaculately minimal look? Well, it’s possible to create an IKEA hack with that. All you need is one of the IKEA Kallax units, some rope, and cushions.

For a makeshift scratching area, just wind the rope around one side of the IKEA Kallax. Place cushions inside the storage unit and your cats will have a great catnap in there.

As a bonus, you can even get the Kallax hanging organiser as a hammock for your cats!

How to keep a white couch clean

Despite most well-meaning remarks about how difficult it is to keep a white couch clean, you’ve gone ahead and purchased one anyway.

But we can absolutely see the appeal — it’s chic, it’s crisp, and it makes your living room look absolutely gorgeous.

However, it doesn’t change the fact that maintaining it can prove challenging. A small part of you might have died when the sides of your new white couch got slightly scuffed during the move into your living room.

Well, fret not! Here’s everything you need to know on how to keep your white sofa forever white.

1. Spills: Blot, don’t rub.

How To Keep A White Couch Clean

So you’ve made your first spill on your pristine white couch.

Here’s what to do: Step one, take a couple of deep breaths. Step two, clean the spill. Technique is key here, so you’ll want to blot the stains out instead of rubbing it off.

Rubbing on a stain will only push it deeper into the material and smear it around — the horror! Your best bet is to take your time blotting off the stain gently.

If you’re unsure of what you can use to get the stain off, the quickest solution on hand is to use a dishcloth dampened in dishwashing soap.

Keep putting pressure onto the affected area using your dampened dishcloth. This will help the cloth soak up as much of the spill in the fabric as possible. (Do this until most -if not all- of the spill has been absorbed)

2. Clean dirt and spills immediately.

We cannot stress this enough: as soon as you spill something on your white couch, you need to clean it off immediately.

Don’t wait till the next day, because the longer the stain stays on your couch, the harder it will be to remove.

Our favorite 1-fits-all method to removing stains is to spill some baking soda powder onto the affected surface (make sure it’s dry), leave on for 20-30 minutes, and then vacuum it all off. This removes most stains instantly like magic.

3. Treat your couch with a fabric protector.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bp7fy6plSv7/

Play your cards right, and you might never ever get a spill stain on your white couch.

The better preventive measure though, is to treat your couch with a fabric protector that renders it stain and spill-resistant, much like the fabric protector you’d use on your expensive suede shoes. This would be one of the best ways to keep your white couch clean.

You can DIY it with the Scotchgard Fabric & Upholstery Protector, which you periodically spray two light coats of and you’ll be good to go.

4. Lint roll daily.

https://www.instagram.com/p/But65AXFKg9/

Have pets at home? Then pet hair will definitely be a problem for your white couch. But no matter — by lint rolling your couch daily, you’ll stop hair from taking over the entirety of your sofa.

All you need is less than five minutes of your time to roll your way through the couch and remove any pet hair.

Better yet – grab your vacuum and suck up all that extra dust and mites that might be lurking in the weaves of your couch. Lint roller + vacuum = the best combo. ;)

It really is a lot easier to handle that little bit of hair daily than to do an extreme sweep every once in a while. This also keeps them from getting trapped inside the fabric weaves (which is an utter nightmare!).

5. Keep it out of the sun.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BqwVH8mFONI/

All of us love a beautifully-sunlit home, but the harsh reality is that the very same natural light you love is the biggest culprit of furniture discoloration.

You don’t have to turn your living room into a cave, but it definitely helps to keep your white couch out of direct sunlight.

Having a UV filter installed on your windows isn’t such a bad idea, either. It is really the UV rays that break down dye pigments in our furniture fabric at the end of the day, causing the colors to fade.

In any case, keeping your white couch away from harsh direct sunlight will preserve its whiteness from turning yellow. After all, you did buy a white couch; not a beige one.

6. Practice good hygiene (on the couch!)

That’s right – good hygiene goes a long way.

Have the habit of washing your hands and feet before jumping onto the couch to avoid leaving oily/dirty residue on the couch fabric.

Your couch is actually an avenue for accumulated dirt and can be one of the dirtiest places in your home even if you don’t realize it.

This is also why you should avoid eating and drinking on the couch, as you’ll surely not want to soil your couch with food.

7. Use a slipcover for easy cleaning.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BwZzm4HDxTS/

Think about all the times you stained your couch (white or not) and thought: “Wow, I wish I could throw my couch into the wash.”

Well, you can. Sort of.

It is possible with a sofa slipcover. Cleaning your sofa feels 100 times easier with a slipcover that you can simply remove and toss into the wash.

They aren’t just for easy cleaning – they’re also great for maintaining the whiteness of the couch (or rather, its covers)! There is more than 1 shade of white out there and with slipcovers, you could have it all.

What more could a white couch lover ask for?

10 IKEA finds we don’t want to live without

Can you remember life before IKEA? Neither can we.

While we can’t imagine how we ever survived home life before everyone’s favourite Swedish furniture store came about, we cannot stop raving about these amazing IKEA finds that make life so much easier.

So without further ado, here are our top 10 IKEA finds which we think should be yours too:

1. The IKEA MULIG clothing rack

In an ideal world, we would separate our whites and colours for laundry day and place our folded laundry back where it belonged right away.

But this is the real world, and we all have that one designated chair where clothes get tossed on.

Swap that chair for one of the popular IKEA finds out there: the IKEA MULIG Clothing Rack. Now you can hang up the clothes that you intend on wearing again (like that pair of jeans you never want to wash) and keep them in plain sight.

Not only will your room look good, but it can also be a rack for you to place tomorrow’s outfit so you don’t need to waste time digging through your wardrobe!

2. The IKEA GLADOM Tray Table

Need a no-frills side table that’s really affordable? Look no further than the IKEA GLADOM Tray Table. It’s a steal at just $19.99 and comes in four chic colours that are bound to suit any home’s interior.

It gets brownie points for the fact that it also doubles up as a tray for serving guests with.

3. The IKEA STOCKHOLM Tray

10 IKEA Finds We Don't Want To Live Without

You might think you don’t need a tray in your home, but then again you’ve never met the IKEA STOCKHOLM wooden tray. Sure, a tray’s basic responsibility is transporting dishes or drinks to a guest.

However, there’s more to a tray’s job than just that. You can place knick-knacks on it and call it home decor. Or you could place your carafes of cooking oil and assorted condiment bottles on it, and it’ll magically make your kitchen counter look a whole lot neater (and prettier).

You could also use it to place your coffee and toast, and have breakfast in bed without the risk of spillage. We won’t judge if it looks so good that you end up Instagramming that.

4. The IKEA SY Iron-On Hemming Strip

10 IKEA Finds We Don't Want To Live Without

Imagine this scenario: you just bought a pretty set of curtains for your new home, and you’re extremely excited to put them up and admire them.

You do the deed, only to find that they’re a little too long and they now look frumpy. You don’t want to remove them and bring them to the tailor, but at the same time you don’t want to cut it yourself and risk ruining it.

Sound familiar?

Well, IKEA has a solution for you in the form of the IKEA SY iron-on hemming strip. This genius invention is essentially a strip of sticker that you can iron on, hemming your curtains to its desired length.

Don’t tell anyone, but we’re having fun using these strips on just about anything else that needs hemming — like clothes.

Who needs a tailor now when you can do it just as easily without sewing skills?

5. The IKEA 365+ Carafe With Stopper

10 IKEA Finds We Don't Want To Live Without

If you find yourself not drinking enough water throughout the day, one solution might be this pretty and minimal carafe from IKEA.

We love the IKEA 365+ Carafe With Stopper at home or in the workplace, and the cork stopper that comes with the glass carafe keeps dirt from going in and water from spilling out.

You don’t have to stop at just water too. You can fill this with infused water, cold-brewed tea, a summer punch — the possibilities are limitless.

Also, having this around at home is great for when guests are around, and you can show off how you’re acing this thing called adulting. After all, an adult that has a water carafe at home must have it all together, right? (The answer’s ‘yes’!)

6. The IKEA KRISPIG Cake Carrier

10 IKEA Finds We Don't Want To Live Without

Believe us, you’d never think that you needed a cake carrier until that delicious sponge you just baked gets squished during the commute to the lucky person you’re sharing that with.

Enter the IKEA KRISPIG Cake Carrier, a dedicated cake carrier that’s designed to keep your baked treasures safe and sound until it’s time to dig in.

This genius invention comes with a two-sided base tray: A smooth surface for large cakes, and a ridged surface that’s perfect for smaller baked goods such as cupcakes or pastries.

When you’re not transporting your cakes around, the Krispig also makes for a pretty serving tray.

7. The IKEA SAXBORGA Tray

It’s affordable, it gets the job done, and it looks good.

That’s what we love about the multifunctional IKEA TEKLA dish towels. If you haven’t gotten a bunch of them already, you definitely should — they should be on your list of kitchen essentials you can’t do without it.

They’re made out of 100% cotton and are extremely absorbent, making them the perfect reusable cloth rag to have on hand in a zero waste kitchen to quickly wipe up spills and messes.

10. The IKEA FRAKTA Bag

10 IKEA Finds We Don't Want To Live Without

Few will disagree, but the IKEA FRAKTA bag is perhaps one of the greatest IKEA finds ever produced. This blue bag is so iconic, even fashion brands have turned it into a fashion statement.

Style aside, there’s a reason why this bag sells so well — it’s durable, spacious, waterproof and extremely hardy. The straps are wide enough that you don’t cause welts on your shoulder from the heavy load, and you can easily wash and store this away if it gets dirty.

Bring it to the beach, use it when you’re moving houses, or even to carry laundry -— the IKEA FRAKTA can do it all.
