Tiny changes that will make your bedroom look like a five-star hotel

The bed is the centrepiece of any bedroom, and in a hotel room, it’s the star.

There’s just something about the beds in places like Shangri La or Ritz-Carlton hotels that scream indulgence and make you want to dive right into them.

From their exquisite linen sheets to the excessive number of pillows and cushions on the bed, everything about these heavenly nests have been designed for over-the-top comfort.

So the big question we have is this: How can we achieve the same look and feel with our own beds at home?

After conducting an in-depth investigation into the touches that make five-star hotel beds so darn inviting, we’ve narrowed down our findings to a handful of handy tips that you can replicate at home:

The More Pillows And Cushions, The Better

Once you’ve got your pillows (the ones you’ll actually sleep on) in place, have fun with throw cushions.

Take your throw cushion game to the next level by playing around with different shapes, colours and textures to create a plush, inviting look that you’ll want to dive into and spend more time in.

When it comes to recreating the look of luxury at home, the more pillows and cushions, the better.

It’s All About The Layers

Ever noticed how many layers there are in hotel beds?

Hotel beds typically use between 2-3 layers of sheets and quilt covers at a time, which is partially why hotel beds feel so “fluffy”.

You can make your bed look more expensive than it actually is by doing the same thing by adding a couple of extra covers and sheets.

One clever trick that hotels use to make their beds look as good as they do is to add an additional throw blanket for more texture and colour.

Overfill Your Pillows

A less obvious trick that hotels use to make their beds look irresistible is to overstuff their cushions and pillows.

Hotels do this to keep their pillows looking fresh, instead of lumpy and used.

You can do the same thing at home by getting additional pillow stuffing and using it to fill up your pillows for that luxurious five-star feeling.

Try “Triple-Sheeting”

Another thing five-star hotels do really well is folding their sheets.

There’s just something about the way every corner is tucked into the bed that makes them so satisfying to pull out and crawl under.

Want to recreate a similar look at home? Easy. Just use this hotel trick called ‘triple- sheeting’ where a thin blanket is layered in-between two starched sheets to make the bed feel crisp and snug when they are folded into the bed.

Using this technique will also help reduce the number of times your blanket needs to be washed, saving you time, water and money.

Add A Bed Skirt

With the help of a fitted bed skirt, hotels are able to hide exposed (and sometimes unsightly) bed legs or frames, giving the room a classier, cleaner look.

At home, we tend to use the space underneath our beds as storage space, so adding a bed skirt can help you make this happen more discreetly while giving your bed that gorgeous, five-star hotel look.

Keep Clutter To A Minimal

One obvious trick we can learn from hotels is to keep our rooms organized and clutter-free.

They also do a good job with not overdecorating their rooms so that these spaces don’t feel overwhelming or chaotic.

After all, their customers are paying for luxury and calm.

By doing this, it also keeps the bed as the main focus of the room, which in turn, makes it look extra comfortable and inviting.

You can do the same by keeping your space organized and storing away everything else that you don’t use every day.

Get Artistic

Pay close attention and you’ll notice that hotels often use art to make their rooms feel more intimate and inviting.

At home, the bedroom is the perfect place to showcase your personality or works of art that inspire you.

Here’s a little-known fact: Hotels often use artwork to trick your brain into associating art with luxury, which means you’re more likely to feel good in rooms with paintings or images hung on the wall.

You don’t have to score a Picasso to create this same effect at home though — all it takes is a piece of art that you love, plus a spot above your bed so that you’ll get to be inspired by it every day.

While staying in a five-star hotel can be expensive, transforming your bedroom so that it looks like one shouldn’t have to be an expensive affair.

All it takes is a couple of affordable touches and regular decluttering to achieve the same effect.

Our ultimate sofa care resource page

Cleaning your furniture is an important part of furniture ownership that often gets overlooked. From spot cleaning to deep cleaning, you need to make sure you’re using the right products and following the correct protocol to clean your sofa, loveseat, sectional, recliner, and any other upholstered furniture.

1. How to clean an upholstered sofa
2. How to care for your sofa covers (our ULTIMATE guide)
3. 7 simple ways to keep your sofa forever new
4. The ultimate white couch care guide
5. The best stain-removing products for your sofa

So, how do you know you’re taking the right approach for the color and material of your couch? Most manufacturers list the cleaning codes in the tag. You can find it under a seat cushion or under the base of the piece.

On the tag, search for the section that says “cleaning information” or “cleaning codes” to get started. You should find either an “S” or a “W” listed.

Cleaning Code S

Think of cleaning code “S” like dry clean only. You should steer clear of using water or water-based cleaners to get stains and spots out. Cleaning solvents are recommended for these materials. When you read cleaning code S think SOLVENT!

Cleaning Code W

This cleaning code is a bit more relaxed. When you find a “W” listed think water! It’s safe to use water, foam upholstery cleaner, or carpet cleaner on a spill. You could even use water-based shampoo.

When you shop for furniture, look for cleaning code W because it’s the most durable and long-lasting upholstery. If you have children or pets, materials with this cleaning code are your best bet.

W: water-based cleaner only
S: solvent cleaners only
S/W: solvents and water-based cleaners
X: no water, vacuum only

Sofa Cushion Maintenance Tips

Spot cleaning and deep cleaning aren’t the only ways to maintain your sofa. Rotating and “fluffing” back and seat cushions is just as important for prolonging the life of your living room furniture.

Here are three of our favorite ways to break-in your sofa evenly:

  • Sit everywhere on the couch. That’s right, even in the middle. It’s important to avoid creating a go-to spot because your cushions will wear unevenly. It won’t be long before you notice there’s a distinct difference between edge seats and center seats.

  • Rotate the cushions regularly. If your whole family lounges on the couch each day and night, you should rotate your cushions often. Once a fortnight is a good place to start. For smaller households or people who use their couch less often, start at rotating once a month and adjust accordingly.

  • Vacuum your couch once a week. Regular couch cleaning will not only get rid of pet hair, dust mites, and dirt that lingers in the upholstery, but it will also keep the fibers in great condition. Regular vacuuming will revert the squished look fibers can get from constant use.

Other tips we have include never eating on your sofa, as this is exactly how it can turn into the dirtiest place in your home (no, really).

The perfect bedroom, courtesy of IKEA

The perfect bedroom is the one that makes you go ahhhh the second you step into it.

It helps you wind down, fall asleep and ideally, stay asleep until dawn.

And you’ve got to admit, no one makes it easier (or more affordable) to create a bedroom that does just that better than IKEA.

So it’s no surprise that we turn to them for bedroom inspiration when we need it.

This week, we decided to pick one our favourite IKEA bedroom looks from their 2019 collection and highlight the features that make it so darn perfect.

So without ado….

A Thoughtful Colour Palette

Looking at this bedroom, one of the things that stand out the most is the consistent use of three colours that complement each other really well: White, grey and black.

We love that this combination makes all the pieces blend together nicely and gives it a cohesive look that soothes the senses, which is what we want in the bedroom.

In addition, a beautifully-harmonised palette like this will give hues that don’t fall into this colour family like say orange, red or gold the opportunity to pop.

A Bed You Want To Fall Into

Your bed shouldn’t just feel good, it should look good too.

You can achieve this by playing with different fabrics, colours, textures and custom touches that transform your bed into the perfect sleep sanctuary that you want to crawl into, and never get out of.

Think cushions that contrast with your dominant colour palette, a throw on the edge of your bed for added texture, or even a custom-made fabric headboard that pulls the entire look together.

Clean, Minimalistic Lines

A hallmark of the IKEA look is its long, sleek Scandinavian-infused lines, which offers a breath of fresh air when compared to the chunky, space-eating side tables that many of us are used to.

This is what makes the LOVBACKEN bedside table so perfect for the bedroom.

The LOVBACKEN’s smooth, oblong shape and natural wood tone soothe the senses, while its generous surface makes it just the right size for an organiser that keeps your essentials close by yet neatly tucked away.

Little Touches That Make It Home

It could be knick-knacks that you pick up during your travels. Or a plant collection that showcases your love for orchids.

It’s little touches like these that give your bedroom personality, texture, colour and a feeling of ‘home’ that helps lighten your spirit as you step into the bedroom.

Wall Space That’s Pretty & Functional

Most bedroom walls are typically left bare and unused, save for a mirror or some artwork.

Not the IKEA-inspired bedroom.

In this look, the wall serves as a functional space, thanks to strategically-placed hooks and tools that hold everything from framed pictures, blackboards, and even a piece of clothing you love.

Unexpected Twists

Not every piece of furniture you pick has to be used for the purpose that they were originally intended for, just like the DALFRED barstool in this bedroom.

We love that its adjustable height and flat surface allows it to double as a plant holder, and an even better display for greens with cascading tendrills.

Space-Saving Shelves

Shelves are essential for keeping your bedroom space organised and clear of stray items, as well as showcasing your personality and the things you love.

Enter the EKBY VALTER shelves, which complement the neutral tones of the room nicely, with just enough contrast so that it stands out.

There you go: The perfect bedroom, courtesy of IKEA!

These IKEA hacks will help clear out your bedroom clutter

Living in a cluttered home can have some profound long-term effects on your lifestyle and wellbeing, so if you’re trying to sleep in it?

It’s probably not helping you get the Zzzzzs you need.

If you’re sick and tired on feeling like you’re walking on a landmine whenever you walk into your bedroom, and just don’t much space to move at all (thanks to piles of stuff everywhere you turn), read on.

Here are 8 simple (and ingenious) ways to help clear out your cluttered bedroom once and for all:

1. Curtain Hooks Make Great Wardrobe Organizers

Who knew?

Never underestimate what a couple of shower curtain rings can do for your wardrobe.

Hook a couple of shower curtain rings to a clothes hanger and voila! You end up with a hanger that can hold multiple scarves, belts, caps, and even jewellery.

Hang one of these up in your wardrobe and never worry about tangled scarves or misplaced belts ever again.

2. Bookshelves As Headboards? Yep

Not ready to throw out your stuff just yet? No problem.

One easy way to declutter your bedroom without getting rid of anything is to add more storage, and our favourite is this hack that basically combines IKEA’s Billy and Brimnes bookcases to create a bed-bridge storage system.

3. Get Seats With Storage

If creating more space in your bedroom is just a matter of organising your items and keeping them out of sight, getting an ottoman or a couple of footstools with storage will do the trick.

These come in a wide range of looks and styles, so all you have to do is pick the one that complements the look of your room the best, and get organising.

4. Use Pegboards As Wall Organizers

Pegboards don’t just belong in the tool shed.

IKEA hackers have been taking to using pegboards as an affordable way to organize their bedrooms by using them to store things like their bags, jewellery, watches and photo frames.

A pegboard is the perfect choice since it lets you do all this and more, thanks to its ability to hold up shelves, baskets, and just about anything you can hang on a wall.

5. Multitask With Tension Rods & Hooks

Tension rods can come in handy when you want to utilize more of your space for storage, especially if you have a tiny nook in your bedroom that you don’t know what to do with.

With just a couple of tension rods and some S-hooks, you can turn your bare wall into a display for your jewellery or and other everyday accessories.

6. Make Space Under Your Bed

We’ve spent quite a bit of time talking about creating more storage space on your walls, which means it’s time to move on….to your bed.

Specifically the space under it.

It’s quite common to have a couple of things stored underneath your bed, but not all beds are tall enough to offer you the opportunity to do that.

With the use of bed risers, which basically act as leg extenders for your bed, you effectively increase the height of your bed and create more space underneath it for storage.

Some bed risers even come with a built-in power outlet for added functionality, although they’re not always the prettiest.

If you think bed risers would do your space some good but are not a fan of how they look, just cover them up with a bed skirt to keep them out of sight.

7. You Can’t Go Wrong With Baskets

When it comes to stashing your stuff in a hurry so that they don’t trip you up in the middle of the night on the way to the loo, nothing beats a good old fashioned basket.

Just pick a colour, style and size that’ll complement the look of your room, and be sure ask your bedroom companion to make regular use of it too if you want your decluttered room to stay that way.

8. Think Out Of The Kitchen

For the smaller objects that constantly end up being misplaced, like your keys, wallet and rings, you may want to simplify how you store them with pretty trays, cups and bowls that you’d otherwise use in the kitchen.

Even better, keeping them contained in a serving tray will keep them within sight and you, less likely to lose them.

As long as you’re keeping your space clear and putting your belongings in their designated spaces, you’ll be able to maintain an organized and decluttered room, fuss-free.

8 things you should be doing if you want to sleep like a baby

We all love to sleep.

More importantly, we all need to sleep.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a night owl or early bird — when it comes to waking up in the morning, almost all of us would choose to hit that snooze button to squeeze in a little extra shuteye, and that’s probably because we’re not getting enough of it.

Getting a good night’s sleep has been proven to have positive effects on your physical and mental health, and although falling asleep may come naturally to most people, many of us struggle with falling asleep daily.

In fact, it’s estimated that one in four women in the United States have trouble falling asleepor staying asleep or both, while one in seven adults battle with long-term insomnia.

If this is you, here are some steps you can take to improve your chances of sleeping like a baby:

1. Wake Up Gently

Some people can sleep for more than 7 hours a day and still feel exhausted in the morning, while others are able to sleep for less than 5 hours and wake up feeling energized and ready to take on the day.

What gives?

Although the number of hours you spend sleeping is important, what’s not talked about as much is the importance of how you wake up in the morning.

For example, if you wake up to loud alarms and blinding lights from your phone, you’re more likely to get out of bed feeling disoriented and exhausted as a result of forcing your body to wake up while it’s in deep sleep.

Each night, your body undergoes multiple cycles of light and deep sleep until you wake up.

Deep sleep is when your body is able to rest and start recharging, which is why you should always avoid waking up from this stage of sleep as much as possible.

This means that instead of using a loud, jarring alarm to wake you up each morning, try using a more gentle, gradual approach to rising, which in turn can lower your resistance to getting out of bed.

Waking up to the gradual rise of the morning sun is one of the best ways to gently pull your body out of deep sleep, making alarm clocks that simulate the sunrise like this one from Philips a great alternative, especially if you don’t have an east-facing window or live in places where sunlight comes out much later in the day.

2. Keep Devices Out Of The Bedroom

It should go without saying that using any type of electronic device before bed can have a profound effect on the overall quality of your sleep.

A team from Harvard Medical School compared reading paper books and light-emitting e-readers before sleep and found that subjects who used their e-readers before sleep ended up taking longer to fall asleep, had less deep sleep, and were more tired the next day.

A quick fix to this problem: Keep your room as dark as possible by storing all your devices that are capable of emitting light in a separate room since the light can disrupt your body’s ability to produce melatonin, which it uses to regulate its sleep cycle.

3. Cut Down On Naps

Most people feel refreshed after a nap that lasts about 20 minutes or so, but waking up from a sleep that’s longer than that can lead to a feeling of grogginess and exhaustion, mostly because you end up waking from deep sleep before your body is able to complete a full sleep cycle.

This throws your biological clock out of whack, throwing unpleasant wrench in your plan to sleep like a baby: You, lying in bed, wide awake all night long.

Your body has its own biological clock that tells itself when it’s time to sleep and when to wake up, which is why having a consistent sleep schedule can help ‘train’ it to adapt to your routine.

This’ll make it easier for you to fall asleep when your bedtime nears.

4. Set Up A Sleep Schedule

Going to sleep and waking up at inconsistent hours daily can also complicate your body’s ability to regulate its biological clock and sleep cycle.

If you’re struggling with irregular sleeping patterns, here are some simple tips to help you get a consistent sleep schedule going:

  • Go to sleep and wake up at the same time every day.
  • Cut down on caffeine towards the evening.
  • Avoid heavy dinners, especially processed meals that are high in sugar, fat, and protein.

The trick to this step is to be consistent enough until your body is able to adapt to the sleep-wake rhythm you want to achieve.

5. Give Aromatherapy A Go

Aromatherapy is one of the oldest forms of holistic healing that’s still being used to this day.

Typically, essential oils and incense sticks are used to promote positive physical, mental, and even spiritual well-being, and can be used to lessen feelings of anxiety and stress before bed.

As a rule of thumb, scents like lavender or chamomile are great for promoting relaxation and sleep, while scents like mint, lemon, and rosemary are used to promote focus and concentration.

6. Avoid Overstimulating Your Body Before Bed

Exercising on a regular basis can have enormous benefits to your mind and body, but exercising close to bedtime could get in the way of you getting enough shut-eye.

Some people stand by the benefits of squeezing in a quick work before bed, but depending on the type of exercise you’re doing, you could run the risk of overstimulating your body and end up feeling restless once you’re in bed.

So if your work out gives you energy and gets you hyped up, try sticking to the three-hour rule: Make sure you have a 3-hour window between the end of your work out and the time you head to bed so that your body has enough time to wind down and recover.

7. Reduce Clutter In Your Bedroom

Your surroundings play a huge role in determining how much high-quality sleep you get.

A study among subjects who consider themselves hoarders found that those who sleep in cramped or disorganized rooms were more likely to develop sleeping disorders.

This result was further confirmed in the same study when they found that subjects who don’t have a hoarding disorder had trouble falling asleep in the presence of clutter.

In short, the more disorganized the room is, the less likely it is for your body to rest well.

If decluttering has you mystified and you don’t know where to start, know this: Decluttering doesn’t always have to involve a complete purge of your belongings. It could simply involve clearing up your space so that you have more of it.

8. Make Your Bedroom Inviting

Apart from tidying up your bedroom and keeping it free of devices, there are other ways to make your bedroom the soothing, calming space you want it to be for sleep.

Playing with colours, textures and soft furnishings like cushions, duvets, blankets, bed skirts, curtains and fabric headboards are simple and affordable ways to give your bedroom the look that you’ve been dreaming of.

Sweet dreams!
