The best IKEA alternatives – just because you can!

Do you have IKEA fatigue?

Maybe you’re bored of IKEA, or maybe you just hate the experience of shopping there, but we thought it’s definitely worth the time to share with you some of our alternatives to shopping at the big blue Swedish store.

1. Craigslist / Gumtree

These two sites are probably most well known in the English-speaking world as a local classifieds site, where you can hunt for jobs, advertise, and also buy and sell items. Listings aren’t organised by the item, but by the seller so you’ll have to search for specific items with keywords and descriptions. Here, you might find some good secondhand items that are worth buying from someone else, such as sturdy shelving and kitchen appliances. Just remember to be careful, negotiate and ask for information, and know how to spot scammers!

Best for: Getting something locally, especially if you’re in a big city. As a student I bought a sturdy dining chair set for close to nothing (okay $20) including home delivery by a kind stranger.

Not good for: Fabric items of questionable origin, mainly for hygiene and allergen reasons.

2. Etsy

Etsy is a treasure trove of handmade and vintage items, but be prepared to browse, browse, and speak to the sellers and makers for a good idea before purchasing your item. A quick glance at the Home and Living category will bring up the listings of various sellers and you can browse through all the upcycled or salvaged vintage furniture which might suit your style. The other great thing about Etsy is that most makers can customize items for you, so if you want that particular style or shape, it’s definitely worth speaking to the maker to see what they can do.

Best for: Smaller goods like decorative accessories, artwork.

Not great for: Bulky furniture like cupboards, drawers and bed frames, unless you’re lucky enough to find a seller in your area.

3. Muji

Muji has made a name for itself with its minimalist aesthetic and unbranded products, like their dreamy-soft travel neck pillow and their equally soft beanbags (which they call the Beads sofa). Their range of unbranded clothes, bedsheets, furniture, and even processed food are popular not just because of affordability but quality. At the moment Muji is present in almost 30 countries around the world including Australia.

Muji store in California

Best for: Plain cotton and linens, stationery, storage boxes and shelving.

Not so great for: Decorative items, not like you can find any in Muji.

4. Nitori

If you’re lucky enough to live in Japan, then you’ll probably already know about the country’s biggest furniture and home accessories retailer as Nitori has hundreds of stores all over Japan, as well as an online store. In the US, some of their products are marketed under the brand Aki Home, and the brand has also expanded to Taiwan. Nitori has been known to offer a massive range of products and low prices, so it’s no wonder people often compare it to Ikea.

A Nitori store in Takatsuki, Osaka

Our Japanese colleague says, “Yes, very cheap! Good quality and reasonably priced.”

Best for: Anything, as long as you’re in Japan!

Not great for: Anything, if you’re not in Japan!

5. CB2

CB2 is the sister store of the massively popular Crate & Barrel store and sells homewares and accessories and is targeted at young adults, which presumably means young adults with smaller budgets than our financially more established adult-adults. In a nutshell, it’s like Ikea’s stuff with Crate & Barrel’s aesthetics without the Crate & Barrel pricetag, I mean just look at this:

CB2’s amazing outdoor collection

Best for: Rugs, dinnerware, glassware, lighting, bedding.

Not great for: Sofas, if you want something within the Ikea price range. Bedframes are also impossible gorgeous but also a little pricey.

In conclusion:

Regardless of your budget or aesthetic, it’s definitely worth shopping around and considering what you’d like to splurge on, and what you’d like to save on. If you spend a lot of time entertaining, it’s worth investing in a lovely dining set or great outdoor furniture. If you love spending time curled up in bed listening to music, you might want to get the best bed your budget can get you, and save on the other stuff. Most importantly, you have the opportunity to decorate your home in a style that you love.

3 reasons to save your sofa this Earth Day

What will you be doing this April 22, 2017? How about saving your sofa this Earth day?

Every year, families around the world would one day wonder, “where should my old sofa go?”. And it’s painfully sad that we should have the mindset of throwing away the sofa instead of trying to salvage it.

And we aren’t even talking about sofas that are broken to the core, or with foam that has been chewed or clawed inside out by your pets — these are sofas with good structural integrity, like this poor abandoned sofa below.

These sofas can be saved, and it’s just a matter of why and how.

Reason #1: To Reduce Landfill Trash

More than 9 million tonnes of furniture are disposed every year (that’s about the weight of 6 million cars), so what can be done about it?
Not a landfill, but some perspective on how much is wasted a year

Here are some alternatives to throwing your sofa away:

Garage or Rummage Sale
Make it fun for the family, best time to de-clutter all the much unnecessary items in the house and make some money while you’re at it!

Online Auction
List it up on eBay/Gumtree/Craigslist and let the website work its wonders. As long as it’s reasonably priced, someone else should be quite happy to take that sofa away from you.

Trade-in
Just like what you do with cars, some furniture shops would accept a trade for your sofa – you just need to pay the difference.

Hand-it-down
Some sofas are just that sturdy, so passing it down from one generation to the next would allow starting families to save quite a bit on furniture costs.

Donate
Not everyone in the world needs a sofa, but most orphanages and homes would welcome charitable people who don’t want their sofa anymore.

Re-upholster
Most of the time it’s just the skin that makes an old sofa unappealing to look at isn’t it? If you have spare cash to spend, it’s always nice to treat yourself to a “new couch” without having to dispose of it.

Get custom slipcovers
Of course, the alternative to upholstery would be to get custom slipcovers and it doesn’t necessarily have to be the traditional-looking, skirted covers with pleats. Here’s a snug-fitting example of a modern looking sofa:

It’s actually an IKEA sofa, with new covers, legs and DIY tufting

Reason #2: To Save Time and Money

Sure, upholstery can be quite expensive and it would be a $1000 or more for a loveseat.

Once again though, aren’t you spending more money if you’re getting another sofa? Not to mention the hassle and time needed to dispose the other sofa. If you were to getting some simple like a custom slipcover, then it’s just a matter of putting the covers on after having it made.

Do make sure they’re machine washable of course so that when it gets dirty, all you have to do is put it in there to wash.

Reason #3: To Save Sentiments

Sometimes, not everything’s about money, success or world domination.

Sometimes, we just want to reminisce the times spent with family. Not everyone would agree with this because sofas are relatively cheap nowadays and can be easily replaced for under a $1000.

But back in the times where sofas were solid as a rock and stayed strong for 10-15 years, there would have been be a lot of cherished moments.

Little bursts of happiness where your child first learnt to say “mama” while you were cradling her, or the times when Daddy was playing video games with junior (and being a sore loser).

Sometimes it’s just thinking back and telling your partner, “Remember the first time we assembled this IKEA sofa, and how we gradually transformed this house into a home?”

That’s the joy of rediscovering that lost lovin’ feeling and the best thing about IKEA sofas, is that you can get replacement IKEA sofa covers for it most of the time.

Conclusion

It’s time to do your part in reducing landfill trash and this is just one of the many ways that you can do so (who changes a sofa every year anyways?).

Should you think that you’re changing your sofa this year though, do consider the option of custom slipcovers – by far, it is the best alternative to upholstery as well as a substitute for getting rid of your sofa.

Muji Beads Sofa (Bean Bag) Review

It’s a bean bag! And a bloody comfortable one at it. This is our review of Muji’s Bean Bag Cushion (Beads Sofa). Or, those in the western part of the world may know it as the “Body Fit Cushion”

OVERVIEW

Muji is a Japanese brand which means “no-brand, quality goods”. And they mean it. Big fans of minimalist design these lot.

So this here body fit cushion / bean bag thing. Yeah so it’s a big ole rectangular thing with 2 soft stretchy sides and 4 rather stiff sides of some kinda cotton fabric. There’s amazingly small but firm micro-beads inside, so don’t let yer cat scratch it up or you’ll have a fun time on your hands. I dunno how they get that stretchy side so stretchy and thin without tearing but there you have it. Bloody geniuses, they are.

There’s a grand total of 2 sizes. Beads sofa, and a beads sofa mini. I think the names are pretty self-explanatory.

COMFORT

Now the really fun bit here is that you can change the shape and support of this sofa by flipping it. Check out this dude havin a snooze.

It’s, honest to god, super comfortable. Though a bit short if you’re trying to fit all of 6 feet 3″ of me on it comfortably.

PRICE

The covers and the beans (beads) are sold separately. Covers at around US$40 and Beads going for US$150. Plus your local sales taxes or GST, it’s around the $200 mark.

It’s not exactly affordable compared to your run off the mill beanbags from Target($49) or K-mart, but hey, its mighty comfortable and it will not compress or require yearly refill over time, so that’s definitely plus.

AESTHETICS

It’s a rectangle which sometimes flattens out into an oval, that doesn’t sound coherent I know. But the beauty of the design lies in the use of solid canvas materials around the sides and the use of stretchy fabrics on the top and bottom of the cover.

This ‘soft innovation’ allows the bean bag to be maintain its rectangular shape compared to the usual bean bags that looks forever frumpy.

There’s 9 colours from Muji, but only not all will be available worldwide.

Not seeing a color that suits your fancy? Spoiler alert, we make custom covers for the beads sofa ;)

DURABILITY

The composition of the Muji covers seems to be a polyester / viscose blend which is very stretchy on 2 sides and slightly stiffer on the other 4 sides. The stretchy sides are super thin, which makes me fear that they might tear easily, especially if they were to catch on anything.

The stiffer sides handled normal wear and tear pretty well, but dust and lint did have a tendency to show up pretty fast.

HACKABILITY

Not many “furniture hacks” you can perform on this one. It’s arguably not even considered a piece of furniture. The only thing could do is change up your look and feel of the bean bag with some custom Muji beads sofa covers from us!

That’s pretty much it unfortunately.

OVERALL CONCLUSION

A stylish and comfortable bean bag from Muji. Perfect for lounging around after dinner, or watching the footy. Durability may be an issue, but with replacement covers you wouldn’t have a problem.

Covers are washable and easy to swap out. May not be the best if you’re taller than 200cm. But at roughly $200 for an extra seat, it’s pretty affordable – get one for your kids or the lounge!

How to get a velvet sofa on a budget

It’s been less than 6 months since we launched our new velvet fabrics for slipcovers and we’ve been overwhelmed with the amazing reception and responses we’ve been getting from everyone. We’ve been fielding questions left and right about this, including concerns about how practical the fabric can be for sofa covers.

In case you’re wondering, yes, these slipcovers can be taken off and machine washed as per our fabric care guide. So once again – are velvet slipcovers more for style rather than practicality? The answer from us is a resounding no, especially not when you can get the sofa of your comfortable, velvety-soft dreams and keep them clean too.

Here are some photos of velvet sofa covers in real homes, not showrooms!

Another angle of this amazing space!

When N. sent us photos of her living room, we were blown away by how amazing her couch looked with the new, super luxurious Karlstad sofa covers. She swapped out the original sofa legs too, and tufted the sofa’s back cushions with our DIY tufting kit for an ultra-glamorous update to her basic couch.

The Sven Grass Green Sofa took Pinterest by storm, but it’s just a little (read: quite) pricey for many budgets. Brittany from Oh My Dear Blog wanted to get the same look with her old Karlstad loveseat and sofa, so replacement slipcovers it was! The best thing about this is that these snug fit slipcovers can be removed and cleaned, unlike traditional upholstery which is fixed on your frame, so it’s easy to maintain when the time comes to wash them. She dreamed up these slipcovers as part of her family room revamp, resulting in a beautiful and bold, yet cozy space for her family to hang out.

5 sustainable ways to create a better living/work space

Many people would tell you that you can arrange tables or paint the walls a different colour to maximise productivity. But as a general rule of thumb – here are 5 ways that you should always remember if you want a better environment to work or live in.

1. Renovate

Actually this should be the very last resort if possible, as it can get incredibly costly and time-consuming. Sometimes at some places, you’re not left with much choice so it becomes necessary.

Would you renovate, or abandon?

Of course, with great work comes great outcome as well – there are several other benefits of renovating your house or office besides to “save” it.

  • You increase your property’s value
  • You reduce maintenance and utility costs
  • You live a more fulfilling life in a place that matches your personality

Here are a couple of examples:

Simple Traditional for The Reserved Modern Futuristic for The Avant Garde

Of course, it’s not just the exterior of the house and with renovations – most of the work should be the internals such as plumbing, electricity, support beams, foundation. At the end of the day, you’ll want to live and/or work in a place that doesn’t break down on you.

2. Re-designing / Re-decorating

Then of course we have the more superficial part of the interior – the design aspect.

Some would even bring “Feng Shui” into this, but even though I don’t swear by it I would actually take notes and make sure my bed doesn’t face the door or window where possible.

So what are the benefits of re-designing, re-decorating and/or re-arranging your home? It’s the ultimate answer to everyone’s question – the pursuit of happiness.

Sure, it will take some YouTube tutorials or audiobooks to teach you a few things – not to mention plenty of “Pinspiration”, but nothing is more satisfying than seeing everything come together in the form of your own character.

Here are another couple of examples:

Minimalist Workspace for The Organised Messy Workspace for The Inspired

3. De-cluttering

Unfortunately sometimes you just can’t re-design a home if it’s already filled to the brim – it may not necessarily be as extreme as a hoarder’s house, but even if it were it can be easily rectified by de-cluttering or using a de-cluttering service.

Having said that, it’s actually quite important to de-clutter especially when you feel the house is getting messy. Here are just some benefits to have a more minimal home:

1. You’ll be able to focus more with less distractions e.g. no more asking “why are all these ugly/unfitting clothes still in my wardrobe?”

2. You’ll arguably become more creative (it’s typically stated that artistic people tend to be messy) but as per point #1, it makes sense that less distractions mean spending more mental power on being creative.

3. You’ll sleep better knowing there aren’t roaches or lizards hiding under your stacked boxes.

4. You’ll feel less moody overall because let’s face it – no one likes to see a mess.

5. You literally have more space to use.

Clutter Free Space

So not only do you end up feeling better, your home would also look and function better too!

4. Springclean

After de-cluttering, it may not necessarily mean you’re in the clear. If there have been foods buried under books or damp cupboard from an unprecedented spill, then it’s very likely you may have a bug or mould infestation.

You wouldn’t really know this until de-cluttering of course, but when you do – this kinda goes hand in hand so bring out the pails and mops.

Super clean kitchen Super clean workspace

Aren’t these the ideal conditions to live in? Okay, it’s slightly unrealistic to achieve this level of cleanliness without a maid or two.

However, if you’re actually cleaning regularly (once a week) you’re safe. There’s a pretty thorough guide over at Cleanzen that covers everything you’ll need to clean at least once in awhile.

The benefits are similar to de-cluttering, if not better. The major impetus for cleaning is basic hygiene – the last thing you want to see are rodents or ants scurrying around your floors.

5. Repurpose and Upcycle

One of our favourite ways to make a living room “whole” again is to take existing items and give them a renewed look/life.

That’s partially how we got into our custom slipcover business.

And it makes perfect economic sense, as well as practical ones – here are some examples:

Upcycled Pallet Board to White Coffee Table Used Lightbulb to Decorative Vase Bicycle Decorated with Watermelon Wheels IKEA Ektorp Sofa with Custom Slipcovers and Stained legs

It comes down to how avant garde you want to be, and how much work you want to put in to creating something that would suit well for your living or work space.
