Our 9 favourite up-cycling ideas around the house

Open your eyes to the many uses of old and every day things. Things that you might have thought about throwing out. Well no more, because today we have 9 different, interesting ideas for upcycling items around your house!

1. Use Frisbees for paper plate support

Paper Plate Support is also the name of my next indie alt band. But in all seriousness, it gives quite a bit of support especially when your plates are flimsy under the weight of all the meat you need.

2. An old door becomes a full length mirror frame

it’s the entrance to all your dreams and fears. But only if you make a secret room and hang this mirror in front of it. Not that I’d do such a thing.

3. Turn a notice board into a jewellery board

A fashion conscious lady like you needs somewhere to hang her haul from Etsy. And you get the bonus of being able to show off.

4. Marble at my un-holey fence!

Life is like a fence filled with marbles. I’m not sure where this analogy is going and neither is anyone about life. But it sure looks pretty, so enjoy it while it lasts!

5.Stick a knife in it!

Take a box, fill it with skewers and behold. A knife holder for any knife! I actually use this and it works pretty great, plus it looks cool.

6. Tidy up those cables on your desk with paper clips

Makes it easy to find that specific charger for your iPad, or iPhone. No more scrabbling under your desk for this, plus you don’t need anything fancy as paper clips litter every office.

7. Class up your serving trays

Use old picture frames as serving trays, pop a classy image or paper inside for best results. You’ll be sipping tea n crumpets with your pinky out in no time.

8. Hide your booze classily with an old card catalogue

Every drawer has it’s own bottle, plus you can easily label each drawer and section. You don’t have to finish them all alone, that’s what friends are for. Or hide your alcoholism from friends and family, classily. The choice is yours!

9. Class up an old IKEA sofa with a custom slipcover

An old sofa bed given a makeover in superbly classy Herringbone. Warning: covers do not come with dog. Although we wish they did. There would be so much not-working going on in the office if they did.

There you have it! 9 fun ways to class up and upcycle your house. I hope you’ve found this useful and give it a shot :)

Slipcovers for sofas with attached cushions – can it be done?

A very important aspect of making customised sofa slipcovers is ensuring that all cushions are removable, i.e. not attached. The whole idea of a slipcover is so that the each cover fits over the sofa neatly, while leaving you the option of being able to change the covers easily when you need a new look or to be occasionally laundered for a fresher feeling.

We recently worked with the lovely Liz, who blogs at Love Grows Wild who came to us with a sofa and loveseat that needed slipcovers to update her living room look. After a short period of discussion about slipcover styles and fabric options, we ran into an unexpected roadblock – the back cushions of her sofa were actually attached to the frame :( But she bravely soldiered on and told us – no problem, I’ll just cut them off!

It was a few nailbiting days while we waited for her response and all was fine, but it wasn’t until I read her blog post that I realised what an adventure it was! Here’s how the sofa looked like before:

Perfectly fine but it didn’t quite fit into her bright, airy living room. She was looking for more of a relaxed, farmhouse chic with new custom slipcovers, and wasn’t about to be stopped by the stubbornly attached back cushions. So out came the scissors and off came the cushions.

Did you gasp, or was it just me? What looked like two cushions is actually one extra long cushion and it’s all just… fluff. White, fluffy fluff. Also, the inside of the back frame is completely exposed. You could leave it, because the custom slipcover will go right over it, but Liz chose to cover it up for extra support.

The finished look is pretty spectacular! Read more about her custom slipcover experience over at her blog, Love Grows Wild.

A few tips if you’d like to attempt this DIY:

– Start small and explore your sofa’s structure. Every sofa is built differently and there’s no telling what will happen, so snip the corner and take a peek, don’t just rip off the threads and end up unravelling your whole sofa!

– It’s a great idea to check with us if it’s actually possible to create a slipcover for your type of sofa before you attempt anything major, as certain designs are definitely non-slipcoverable. For example, wingbacks and sofas with complex shapes are examples of sofas that we can’t create slipcovers for.

Question: Can custom slipcovers be created without detaching the cushions?

Theoretically, yes.

People get custom slipcovers for two main reasons: To save their old sofa and/or to get a new look, ideally both at the same time. If you still want the convenience of having a washable slipcover without the hassle of detaching the cushions and you aren’t too fussed about how it looks, universal slipcovers are your best bet.

Question: Why are sofas made with attached cushions in the first place?

Attached cushions are very common on sofas which are upholstered in leather as leather cushions tend to be slippery and slide off if they aren’t sewn to the frame. For fabric upholstered sofas, attaching the cushions also give it a more fitted look and can help drooping back cushions stay in shape as the sofa ages. Unfortunately they’re quite difficult to vacuum as it’s difficult to get into those nooks and crannies.

Question: Should I just opt for reupholstering my sofa with attached cushions?

With upholstery you’d be able to maintain the integrity of the sofa’s shape and it’s also the perfect option if your sofa has intricate designs on the back or armrests that would otherwise be covered up by slipcovers. Additionally, upholstery professionals could help you replace old batting and lining that may have flattened over time. Anything to save your beloved sofa!

IKEA Klobo sofa storage hack

Get expanded storage space under your Klobo sofa with this easy hack! I bet you didn’t know about this but the Klobo actually has a tonne of space right underneath the seats, inside the frame. We’re going to take advantage of this.

Okay so, first things first. This is going to be a bit handsy, DIY. You’ll need a friend for this because friends make projects fun. Buy him a six pack of appreciation for doing all the heavy lifting.

Things you need:

  1. Jigsaw
  2. Power drill
  3. Tape measure
  4. Spirit level
  5. Screwdriver
  6. Pencils
  7. Staple gun
  8. Craft knife / prybar
  9. 1″ screws (flathead, Phillips)
  10. plywood cut to fit underside of Klobo

The Process:

1. Flip the sofa onto it’s back like a turtle. Pause to laugh at it wiggling.
2. Use your prybar / craft knife to undo the staples fixing the covers to the front frame.
4. Pull up the foam from the frame (not off though!) we’re just lifting it up a little.
4. Take your spirit level, pencil and tape measure, then mark out a rectangle on the front of the frame (on top of the fabric and foam). Remember to square it!

5. Take that craft knife and cut through the foam and fabric, following the rectangle. Remove fabric and foam.

6. Now the wood is exposed, take your jigsaw and cut the rectangle out of the frame.
7. Fold the foam and fabric back over the cut, and staple it down. The jigsaw will create a lot of dust, so now would be a good time to clean things up with a duster / vacuum. Turn sofa upside down.

8. Take your piece of plywood (you can use two pieces side by side for better strength) and fasten it to the frame using your 1″ screws. Predrill before fastening (use a drill bit to drill a pilot hole that you then fasten the screw through.)
9. Flip back upright. Voila!

10 (optional). Slip on your Klobo slipcover, which we shamelessly make in a loose fit style that looks really great.

There you have it! Hope you enjoyed this, I know it’s helped a lot for my apartment :) Oh, and if you can’t imagine this guide, we found one on YouTube.
