In this week’s care guide, we go over how to care for your wooden, replacement sofa legs. While most might not think that sofa legs or furniture legs in general need some TLC, we know you care for your sofa (why else would you be reading a slipcover blog?)
You can also apply these tips to caring for other wooden furniture.
Prevention
We all know the saying. But there’s a very simple tip to make sure your wooden furniture (legs as well) is kept in good condition.
Avoid heat and light. That means not next to a heater or radiator, or in a room where temperature varies greatly. No direct sunlight either, indirect sunlight is also pretty bad. Try to use drapes or curtains to cut off the heat and light.
Cleaning
You should dust lightly and frequently, at the same time as you do the rest of the sofa. I’d recommend a micro fibre cloth, barely damp; rub in the same direction as the grain. Don’t use a feather duster as broken quills might actually scratch up the wood.
If there’s heavy dirt or grime built up, prepare a mixture of oil soap and water. Dip a natural sponge in the mixture, wring out most of the water and rub in firm circles. Rinse with a sponge dipped in clean water, and dry with clean cloths.
Restore
Your legs or wooden furniture are getting on. You want to restore it. Good news is, you can do this two ways. Either with wax (beeswax is easiest) or with a furniture polish.
Make sure you give it a thorough cleaning first. Wax is semi-solid and takes a bit of effort to apply, but results in a long-lasting coat. Furniture polish is easy to apply but leads to overapplication which can result in a dull layer. Use sparingly, like furniture spray. For spray, buff it with a clean cloth after applying.
