How to fix my leather IKEA Klippan sofa

So recently we’ve been getting quite a few enquiries from the original (faux) leather Klippan owners on whether we can custom make slipcovers for them or if our current Klippan slipcovers can fit their leather Klippan sofa.

Well, the only difference between the faux leather Klippan and the fabric Klippan is that the faux leather version is actually upholstered and as such doesn’t have velcro attached to the base of the sofa. Whereas for the standard Klippan, the velcro can be found on the underside of the frame.

Does that mean I can’t use your custom slipcovers?

Of course you can! Thankfully, we have 2 types of slipcovers for the Klippan:

  1. The standard snug Klippan sofa covers (with velcro) and;
  2. The Klippan Long skirt slipcovers.

If you own the original faux leather version of the Klippan, we would recommend getting the long skirt slipcovers, as we don’t need to consider the presence of velcro when putting on the covers.

But I like the original faux leather Klippan – any other options?

If the long skirt isn’t your style, you can still get the snug fit, but it would require a bit of DIY on your part – here’s how!

Firstly, when you get your standard custom Klippan slipcovers and put them on and you’ll notice that the covers have the soft side of the velcro at the corners which are supposed to be attached to the underside of the sofa, but your leather Klippan sofa would not have the corresponding (hard/hook) velcro to match the covers, and therefore won’t be able to secure the fabric to make it look snug.

So we’ve come up with a 3-step tutorial on how to fit our standard Klippan slipcover on your faux leather Klippan!

Tools required: Staple gun and Velcro Strips (Hard/Hook)

Step 1: Put on the covers, and mark where the velcro are supposed to stick on the sofa base

Staple gun

Step 2: Bring out the staple gun (or glue gun) to staple the hard/hook side of the velcro onto the sofa base to match the covers

Step 3: REJOICE! Because now you can fit any Klippan Slipcover onto your sofa, especially the one you got from us!

Do I need to remove the leather before I put on the slipcovers?

Nope, our Klippan covers are made to go over the leather upholstery. If you’re worried about fabric slipcovers being slippery on the leather, rest easy as you can tuck in the fabrics at the corners of the sofa as deep as you can and it would stay on pretty snugly – tried and tested.

Alternatively, you can get some non-skid pads from your local hardware store which cost about $10, cut them to size and put them on the leather seats before covering them with the slipcovers.

What about leather on leather?

If you had the original leather Klippan and wish to replace it with leather, we have our very own bycast leather collection – the Modena (Black or White) or Urbanskin (Dark Brown) that you can consider.

We understand the feeling of having a modern, sleek leather couch in your house and that’s probably why you got the faux leather Klippan in the first place! Kindly note though that, the leather slipcovers are only available in the snug fit and not the long skirt slipcovers because loose leather is not appealing. So you’ll need to go back to our 3-step tutorial to attach some velcro to your sofa.

You can also read more on how to fit leather slipcovers over your Klippan once you’ve attached the velcro to the underside of your leather Klippan.

Why do you need to change your slipcovers?

The living room is the first place room you or your guests see upon entering your home, so naturally it has to look good constantly. Plus it’s where you spend most of the time with people watching television, holding social gatherings or game nights.

With so much traffic, your sofa is bound to get dirty or damaged through wear and tear and if you think about it – would you really want to wait until the sofa looks so dilapidated beyond recovery that you start searching for a solution? Of course not, which is why it makes sense to always keep a spare and get a custom slipcover for your sofa if you haven’t already got one.

But what are the other reasons to change your slipcovers besides the aesthetic?

Hygiene

In many cases, cleanliness in the living room is often overlooked. In comparison, we would change our bedsheets every month – but when was the last time you changed your sofa slipcovers?

We’re encouraged to wash/change our sofa covers at least once a year, twice a year for those with allergies. I’m sure many are aware of the notorious dust mites on your beds, and these are also present on your carpets and sofas as well. So don’t be surprised to find a few creepy crawlies nesting between the loose change tucked somewhere in the sofa as well.

If you have pets and kids, there’s a larger tendency to have more dead skin, pet hair, sweat and other careless spillages that even the adults have no control over. Spot cleaning helps, but you will never be able to get rid of all the dirt and dust mites this way. Changing and washing your slipcovers occasionally however, would definitely make the difference in breathing more easily around the living area.

Longer-life Sofa

Especially if your sofa is an upholstered one that doesn’t come with any slipcovers, its lifespan becomes very dependent on how well you take care of it. For one, unless stated, your sofa should NEVER be placed under direct sunlight, especially over prolonged periods of time. Just like humans get tanned or sunburnt, fabrics will discolour and the darker the colour – the more obvious the discolouration.

It’s also quite commonly taken for granted that darker coloured sofas mean it’s easier to hide stains, dust, dirt, etc – which when accumulated over time only damages the sofa even further.

With that said, it makes sense to get machine washable custom sofa slipcovers for 2 good reasons:
1) It gives your sofa an added layer of protection, meaning fresh, clean and bright covers always – because they’re washable!
2) It covers up all the imperfections your sofa had – discolouration, stains, torn fabric, etc.

As long as your sofa is still in reasonably good condition inside, all it needs is just a simple exterior makeover.

Back-up Plan

Let’s face it, accidents are bound to happen no matter how careful we are, which is why many of us are opting for removable and machine-washable slipcovers.

Imagine wining and dining with your friends, sipping red wine in the living room after dinner and suddenly you hear the sound of a wine glass broken to bits onto the floor, and you simultaneously see red wine stains across your lovely white sofa.

And your in-laws are visiting in a few days! The sooner you wash them the better, but washing slipcovers is not an easy task!

So it’s always good to have a spare pair of slipcovers beforehand or get water/stain resistant slipcovers coated like our “Liege” fabrics.

New Slipcovers – New Look

The house is your playground, you should be allowed to be creative with it. There are just so many amazing ideas that you can get on the Internet which you can experiment with to see which one fits you and your home best. Why limit your options to just 1 look per household?

Nautical Design Living Room

You don’t always have to wait till Christmas for a new set of slipcovers, many seek to have that new look to show off to friends and family. Your sofa has a long lifespan, and you can keep up to the trends by giving it a few “clothes” to choose from. We buy clothes for ourselves very often, and your sofa deserve more than just one slipcover to give it that everlasting charm.

IKEA Stocksund sofa series (2014) review

Just a few weeks ago, a few of us popped by IKEA again to get some furniture for the office. We figured that we also might as well take a look at the new Stocksund series and try them out, even though it isn’t something we’d consider as timeless as the Klippan, nor as classic as the Ektorp – but it did change our opinion a little after giving it a test run.

IKEA Stocksund – First Impressions

The first thing that came into my mind when I saw the Stocksund was that it was very “English”. The IKEA Stocksund has short english roll arms and spindle legs, and as my eyes looked over the dark grey 3-seater and the bench with the black legs – it felt like the only thing missing from this was a cup of tea and some scones, I really liked it! The loveseat, 3-seater, armchair and the bench were all available in the display showroom.

We hopped around the furniture like we were playing musical chairs, getting a good feel of the entire range from armchair to 2 seater and to the 3 seater – all of us unanimously agreed that it was indeed comfy. It has wide and deep seating, good paddings that you don’t sink in when you sit in between the seats.

With the short English roll armrest, you can still fit about 2/3 of your arms on it. What’s interesting is that the set actually comes with has an additional set of armrest protectors, not something we commonly see on the other IKEA models so this was a pleasant surprise.

The Stocksund is available in Nolhaga fabric (75% cotton, 25% polyester) which comes in 3 colours – Dark Grey, Light Beige & Grey. You can also choose the legs to either in birch wood or black colour.

Initially, I really liked the dark grey and the black legs because it looks really classy but that was before I discovered that they had another range of fabric and colour, which was the Ljungen/Vellinge fabric (100% polyester) which comes in 2 colours – Light Brown and Light Red, which we didn’t manage to see in person unfortunately.

The Stocksund in Ljungen/Vellinge Light Red has officially made it to my favourite list. It wasn’t too bright and showy and it looks so good with black legs! The 3-seater sofa costs AUD 789 for them in Nolhaga fabrics, and AUD 899 for them in Ljungen/Vellinge fabrics. You’ll need to pay a lil’ bit more to get them in Ljungen/Vellinge fabrics, but it’s definitely a beauty. Then again, it maybe because I’m just biased hah!

Verdict

Aesthetics: 8/10 (because I adore the Light Red Stocksund)
Comfort: 8/10
Price: 7/10

PS: We also stuffed ourselves silly with IKEA food (meatballs!) right after all that hard work testing out sofas.
