There is no greater joy than the anticipation of welcoming home your newborn, whether it’s your first, second or third child. But of course, with the arrival of baby comes the preparation period where it seems like all you’re doing is gathering stuff. Clothes, toys, baby books, collecting names and their meanings, magazine clippings on parenting and practically everything baby-related!
Basically, you want a room that is child-friendly complete with all the safety requirements but at the same time, you want it to look pretty and warm. The great news is you can have both practicality and style; and we came up with ideas that will show you exactly how you can create your newborn’s room that combine both these aspects at different times for the day.
1.Feeding time
This is probably what you will spend most of the time doing so you want to be in a comfortable position while you’re breast-feeding or giving the bottle. Invest in a good, quality feeding chair that will support your back and give your arms and feet rest too.
Choose a classic style to give it timeless elegance and if you’re not sure how practical white fabrics would be, why not replace it with a custom slipcover? You could choose beautiful prints or gorgeous pastels but sometimes, plain and simple just works the best. If you really want your armchair to “pop”, adding piping/welting would do the trick.
2. Bath time
Choose a tub that is safe, made with eco-friendly materials so that you can place all lotions, creams, shampoos, oils, sponges and little towels in one spot where they are easy to find, easy to reach yet look super neat and tidy. You could have soothing music playing softly in the background while you wipe your baby’s hands, feet, face and gently wash off milk spills. Add squeaky toys that are either different types of animals or get a collection of ducks in different forms, sizes and colours. This will add colour, warmth and fun to the overall room.
3. Sleep time
Babies typically do not stay asleep for more than two to four hours at a time, so try to develop a bedtime routine. It can be a simple one such as changing your baby for bed, singing a nice lullaby and softly kissing his forehead before letting your baby fall asleep in your arms or in the crib. A great buy for the budget-conscious family is a travel cot with a removable bassinet. This practically saves you the trouble of bending over to check on your baby or pick them up while they are sleeping. When you are home, the cot made of mesh fabric (therefore perfectly safe) can double up as a playpen so it can stay in the room as your baby grows up to 2-3 years. Some travel cots also come with a removable changing table as well as storage pockets to keep baby essentials at hand.
To blend in with the style of the room, pick a travel cot that matches the focal colour of the room or type of fabric. The blanket or bedding in the crib could match with the curtains or the soft hues of the wall paint or the rug on the floor. Furniture art decals also give an edge to the room.
4. Play time
Toys, fluffy bunnies and general kid stuff should be neatly packed away so they don’t make the room look messy and disorganized. You can also get creative by using pretty storage boxes or use normal boxes and paint them in the same colour of the majority of the items in the room.
Alternatively you can get one of those large wooden toy chests and engrave it with your newborn’s name. To save floor space, you can also display toys, family photographs on floating shelves so the walls don’t look too empty.
Keeping all these in mind, you can be sure that your newborn’s room will be welcoming, cozy, practical in every aspect when it comes to your baby’s schedule and needs whilst being out-of-this-world stylish.
